More than 60 percent of vulnerable Tennesseans facing significant legal need
The Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice (ATJ) Commission and the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS), along with the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA), has done a study and found that 60 percent of low-income Tennesseans face civil legal problems. For the full article, click here.

Grant Requests now being taken by Nashville Bar Foundation 
 The Nashville Bar Foundation is accepting applications for grants from now until Jan. 15, 2015 at 4 p.m. CST. Non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply. Applicants should support the provision of law-related educational and charitable programs, as well as services promoting knowledge, understanding and respect for the law among students, the general public and legal community. Two Ceremonies Held in Nashville to Welcome New Attorneys

On Nov. 4, 2014, the Tennessee Supreme Court held two ceremonies at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville to welcome several hundred new attorneys to the law practice. In the break between the two ceremonies, many of the new attorneys and families went to the Tennessee Bar Center open house. Visit TBA.org for photos from that event.
$1.5 Million Federal Grant Awarded to Veterans Court
The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services is using a $1.5 million federal grant to provide increased funding to the veterans’ courts in Shelby, Montgomery and Davidson counties. The grant will allow these courts to expand their services over a three-year period, giving hundreds more service members in Tennessee the opportunity to explore treatment and recovery programs in place of incarceration.

Lawyers Have Been Selected for 2015 Leadership Law Class 37 

The Tennessee Bar Association has chosen 37 lawyers from across Tennessee to participate in the 2015 Leadership Law class. The Leadership Law program has been running for 12 years and is designed to assist Tennessee lawyers by enhancing their knowledge and skill sets, allowing them to go and serve as leaders in their profession and local communities. The class will begin in January and run for six months. The participating lawyers will learn about leadership in the legal profession, issues in the courts, policymaking in state government and the importance of community service. You can see the class list here.

Tennessee Ranked 10th in the Nation for State Court System

Each year, the National Center for Access to Justice in New York City releases its rankings of all the state court systems across the country and how well each serves their respective publics. This year, Tennessee State Courts were ranked number 10 with a score of 64. The only states to come in ahead were Washington, D.C., Connecticut, Hawaii, Minnesota, New York, Delaware, Washington, Colorado and Wisconsin.

Tennessee Nonprofit Laws are Changing with the New Year
Beginning Jan. 1, the Tennessee Nonprofit Corporations Act will be changing drastically. Three online CLE video courses are available for viewing now and showcase the changes that will be taking place. Choose from the following courses: disclosure and conflict of interest rulescharter and bylaw provisions; or entity conversions, membership exchanges, charitable assets and public benefit transactions.
