A Special Note from the President & CEO

It’s been a special week for me. Learning a new routine for my (longer) daily commute. Developing a working relationship with the dynamic and talented staff here at the National Assembly. My first board meeting as the CEO, rather than a board member. New perspectives. Potential and opportunities at every turn.

Most of all, this was a week to become fully immersed in the rich and robust offerings of the National Assembly. Since I come from a member organization, I understand and appreciate the value that membership in the National Assembly brings to an organization. The sharing of resources, the access to the latest trends and models of excellence in the nonprofit sector, the reframing of the language that human service agencies use to communicate with their stakeholders, all are part of this network. And above all else, partnering with each of you to inspire and inform a world where each person has the opportunity to reach their full potential, and all of our communities are stronger because of our commitment to that work.

I look forward to connecting with many of you in the coming weeks and months. I want your input and need your wisdom. Let’s keep moving forward, together.

Lee Sherman, President & CEO

Join the Next Cohort of the NHSA Executive Leadership Certificate Program
The National Human Services Assembly is excited to announce the call for applicants to the 2nd cohort of the NSHA Executive Leadership Certificate Program (ELCP). This unique learning experience is designed specifically to help new or potential CEOs within the nonprofit human service sector build the foundation of knowledge and experience they need to become successful executives. In partnership with the Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Innovation at Arizona State University and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs’ Executive Education at Indiana University, the ELCP includes small group work, networking sessions, and peer-to-peer interaction to give executives the tools they need to properly manage their workplace. With the combination of both online and in-person environments, the ELCP is uniquely valuable to executives seeking training within their busy schedules. The “Early Bird” deadline for this engaging certificate program is September 30, 2016.
Overhead Myth, Member Benefits, and More!
On May 25, the National Human Services Assembly held its Member Engagement Forum, comprised of the Group Purchasing and Affiliate Relations Peer Councils, to share discussion and strategies on how to optimize member engagement. The day included a presentation from Adrian Bordone, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at GuideStar, which focused on the concept of “The Overhead Myth.” He stressed the importance of managing toward results, knowing the true cost of achieving organizational missions, and effectively communicating the true costs to funders. The Forum also included a panel led by representatives from NHSA member organizations. They shared ideas on unique and innovative member benefits, providing such examples as the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities’ Commitments Framework, 501(c) Services’ Nonprofit HR Hotline and Lutheran Services in America’s Communities of Practice.

The Charity Trap: By invoking this narrow view of our sector and reinforcing the perception that nonprofit professionals act only out of compassion, we make it more challenging to position the sector as worthy of investment and as being comprised of trained experts deserving of fair compensation. Not only do we want to be sure not to refer to our own organizations or work as “charity,” we will expedite uptake of the new frame if we are proactive in educating others on such problematic terms.
