1 Kings 8:41-43
“As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name—  for they will hear of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm— when they come and pray toward this temple, then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name."
New International Version (NIV)
How do we learn to pray?  When we read the Psalms we find beautiful patterns of prayer.  In fact, praying the Psalms is one of the most enriching spiritual exercises I could recommend to you.  In some ways our good focus on singing and preaching have supplanted the practice of corporate prayer.

Solomon prayed a beautiful prayer dedicating the Temple.  He envisioned people from other nations coming to the Temple to pray.  God would hear them and answer their prayers, too.  Would you pray these verses, too?

This prayer reminds us that God loves the whole world.  He wants all people everywhere  to know him.  John’s vision of heaven revealed people from every tribe, tongue and nation worshiping God.  As we love our own country well, let us remember that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.  God’s house has always been a house of prayer for all nations!

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for your inclusive love.  Forgive us when we move beyond good patriotism to a nationalism which excludes others.  As our nation and other nations define their borders, help us to love all the guests in our gates so well that they come to believe in you, too.  Help us to make disciples of all nations, right where we live.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
