BLM Portland Weekly Meetup - Tuesdays nights,  7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Black folks only.

We are organizing for the overthrow of colonialism and capitalism. Liberation is not power or representation in a violent, backwards system. Liberation is not slightly more comfortable or tolerable oppression. Liberation is not the ability to exploit other oppressed people for the illusion of safety and a few creature comforts soaked in blood. Liberation is every human of every identity on earth coexisting with safety, self-determination, and a connection to all of humanity, the ancestors, the water, and the land, with free healthcare, free housing, free food, free education, and the warmth and protection of a thriving planet, culture, and community.

All Black Lives Matter Portland events, spaces, and organizing are open to ALL Black folks including: Black trans folks, Black queer folks, Black non-binary folks, hood Black folks, poor Black folks, houseless Black folks, undocumented Black folks, Black femmes, currently and formerly incarcerated Black folks, Black single parents, Black elders, Black Latinx folks, Black Muslims, not yet woke and still getting woke Black folks, Black folks living with mental illness, Black nerds, Black weirdos, Black hoes, differently abled Black folks, anxious as fuck Black folks, Black folks who’ve never organized a day in their lives, ain’t shit but trying to do better Black folks, and more.

Radical Elders Discussion Group - Thursdays, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
WHO: Elders, you, your chosen family, friends, feminists. If you’re an intersectional feminist and want to engage in awesome community-building discussion while learning from your elders, please come!

WHAT: This is a discussion led by radically progressive elders in our feminist communities, but people of all ages and all genders are welcome.

WHY: Intergenerational dialogue is critical for feminist movements and our struggle in dismantling systems of oppression. Let’s come together and engage in constructive dialogue as we learn from our radical elders!
People's Community Medic Training - September 24th, 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Become a community first responder! Learn how to help your friends, family, and neighbors in case of medical emergencies or violence. Join #BLMPDX for a street medic workshop with The People’s Community Medics! You’ll learn basic emergency first aid and ways to keep yourself and your community safe until an ambulance arrives. Donations appreciated but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
About the trainers:
“The People’s Community Medics were founded in the summer of 2011 by Sharena Thomas and Lesley Phillips. As members of the Oscar Grant Committee we learned that the BART police refused to call an ambulance for 20 minutes for fatally wounded Oscar Grant, despite the passionate pleas for medical help from his friends who were detained at the Fruitvale station by the police. That experience as well as our knowledge that 911 calls often do not result in an ambulance arriving in a timely manner to Black, Brown and poor neighborhoods largely inspired us to teach our people basic emergency first aid so that we can help one another.”

What do we offer?
IOW has a number of services available to the general public. First and foremost, we're a feminist bookstore that takes pride in selling everything from well-known authors like bell hooks to more obscure feminist texts. If you're looking for something that we don't have, we'd be hapy to order it for you! Our bathroom is gender-neutral and wheelchair accessible, so if you're in need of a safe bathroom feel free to use ours. We have a library with all sorts of feminist literature, ranging from graphic novels to textbooks to zines, all available for you to check out whenever we're open. We also have laptops available for use during our open hours, so if you need to use a computer, come right in and we'd be happy to let you use one.
Books To Prisoners - Tuesday nights, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Portland Books to Prisoners is a non-profit, volunteer run, donation based organization that provides free reading materials to incarcerated individuals. New volunteers are always welcome. Come help us inspire the incarcerated!
Want to volunteer?

We are always looking for new volunteers to help make In Other Words a more effective and inclusive organization. Have a skill that you think we might be able to use?
