TBA Names 2015 Corporate Pro Bono Awards Winners
On March 7, the Memphis office of law firm Wyatt Tarrant & Combs and global medical technology giant Medtronic were recognized for their commitment to providing free legal services to Tennesseans at the Ninth Annual Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Gala in Nashville. Judge Bernice Donald with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit gave the keynote address, and remarks were made by Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Lee, Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Co-Chairs Andy Branham and Jim Barry and TBA President Jonathan Steen.
Law Examiners Elect New President Julian Bibb
Stites & Harbison lawyer Julian Bibb was elected president of the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners (TBLE), according to the Williamson Herald. This is Bibb’s second election as president of the TBLE, which administers the bar exam for law school graduates seeking to become licensed attorneys in the state of Tennessee and regulates attorney admission from other states seeking to move their practice to Tennessee. 

New Business Court Will be Model for Tennessee
Davidson County’s new Business Court will provide “more predictable, consistent results, and more timely resolutions of business disputes,” Chief Justice Sharon Lee said in announcing the pilot project. Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle will preside over the court and help expand best practices for future business courts.
Tennessee Sees $188 Million Boost Provided by   Legal Aid
Legal aid providers generated a $188.6 million boost to the Tennessee economy from 2013 cases, according to the Economic Impact of Civil Legal Aid Organizations in Tennessee study. Tennessee’s civil legal assistance programs work with low-income and vulnerable populations, but the study suggested that investing in these programs provides benefits to more than the direct client population. Every dollar invested in legal aid produces over $11 in financial benefits, extending to businesses, local governments and individuals across all social classes.
Nashville Lawyers Honored at Nashville Business Journal's Luncheon
Five Nashville lawyers were among the city’s best young professionals at the Nashville Business Journal’s “40 Under 40 Luncheon” on March 26. Those recognized were: the Tennessee Bar Association’s Josie Beets, public policy coordinator for the association and pro bono director and board member with the Military Spouse JD Network; Laura Baker with the Law Offices of John Day; Miranda Christy with Stites & Harbison; Casey Summar, executive director of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville; and Brigitte Tubbs-Jones, director of legal services for the Tennessee Department of Human Resources.
