Message from the CEO
Forgiveness

Next week is the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.  As a Jew, I have always been taught that this is the holiest day of the Jewish year. It is a day for deep devotion in community, a day to connect with your spiritual self, and a day to repent for past transgressions in the hope that you will be written in the Book of Life for another year. The personal reflection that can, and should, take place during an evening and day of prayer is an opportunity that many of us do not get often enough during the year.

One key element of repentance is the act of asking forgiveness. It is not enough to ask for forgiveness through prayer, and in Judaism we do not ask for forgiveness through a spiritual leader. We are directed to ask forgiveness directly from those we have offended throughout the year. And, forgiveness is a two-party activity. The person whose forgiveness is sought must listen and grant the request, assuming it is made with sincerity. This relational experience between people is core to each individual's ability to truly repent.

There is much to learn for all of us in this active, participatory act to forgive and be forgiven. None of us are beyond committing transgressions, both minor and major, to those around us. If we are interested in repairing and strengthening those relationships, then we must acknowledge those transgressions not just to ourselves, but to those we have hurt. Having those sincere conversations will help us to build better communities, together.

Two-Gen Approach Making an Impact in Local Communities
NHSA recently released "The Two-Generation Approach Framework: A Closer Look at State-Level Implementation," a report focused on strategic Two-Generation (Two-Gen) policy and programing models within three states. It comes at a time when Two-Gen work is gaining momentum within the sector, resulting in a quantified impact on local communities. Learn about some of the Two-Gen work being done in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and in Memphis, Tennessee, in partnership with Ascend at The Aspen Institute.
Get Families on the Agenda at the Next Debate

Your help is needed to put issues affecting children in front of the presidential candidates. For the debate on October 9, moderators have agreed to consider the most popular questions from a website. Patrick McCarthy, president and CEO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, has posted a question to the site focused on promoting opportunity for low-income families. Encourage your partners, friends, and networks to vote for Patrick's question and show your support for a substantive debate on poverty and opportunity. Visit http://bit.ly/debateQ and click on the "Vote" button. Then use your social media, networks, and personal contacts to persuade others to join the effort.
NHSA Staff Supports 9/11 Day Volunteer Event with AARP
The NHSA staff had a great time volunteering a few hours to complete a meal-packing challenge with AARP in support of 9/11 Day's "Tomorrow Together" Initiative. The meal pack challenge successfully resulted in 1.5 million meals packed that will be distributed to seniors throughout the Washington, D.C. area. If you missed the opportunity to participate in your community, monitor 9/11 Day throughout the year for other activities and to partner for the "Tomorrow Together" Initiative next year.

Mobilization Update: The NHSA Reframing Team has conducted intensive workshops in communities across the country, including New York City, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, Chicago, Austin, and more to share FrameWorks research on human services and provide participants with the tools to start using the Building Well-Being Narrative. In the first year of the mobilization, over 500 community and national leaders have been trained on the new frame. Over the next several months, the team will head back to some of those communities to provide a second round of workshops in order to increase the participants’ expertise in applying the new frame to their communications.
