The House Education Committee meeting was canceled yesterday, but Chairman Coleman provided assurances that the cancellation would not derail the consideration timeline for Senator Fort's community schools legislation. SB 30 will be heard during the House Education Subcommittee Administration & Planning meeting on Monday, March 13th at 1:00PM in room 403 of the Capitol.
Today, Day 30 of the legislative session, the House Working Families' Caucus convened and heard presentations from Public Education Matters Georgia, the Georgia Job/Family Collaborative and CWA Georgia Political Council.
Public Education Matters provided an overview of two education funding bills -- HB 217 (private school scholarship tax credit) and HB 237 (allows for private donations for grants to public schools), as well as the struggling schools legislation HB 338 and the Senate's community schools legislation SB 30. More information on each of these bills, with the exception of HB 237 can be found in our Day 26-27 hotline
The meeting was brief due to time constraints that limited discussion.
HB 217 was heard and debated today during the Income Tax Subcommittee of the Senate Finance Committee's meeting. The bill passed out of committee and will be heard and debated by the full Senate Finance Committee.
GAE President Sid Chapman will testify on HB 338 during tomorrow's Senate Education & Youth Committee meeting, which is currently scheduled to be held at 1:00pm in room 307 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building.
