Lighthouse Writers Workshop
A love note from George Saunders to all of us.

“ Lighthouse makes me hopeful
about the future of the arts in America.”
   George Saunders

Dear Friends,
When we opened our doors 18 years ago, we embarked on an unlikely story. To think that a place like Lighthouse—imagined, built, and operated by writers—could even survive, let alone become the robust community it is today? It was a long shot. Now we live in a time when all the major cities are opening literary centers, and our city’s is top among them. There’s a reason for that, and the reason is you.
Thank you for the poems you write, the stories you draft, and the books you read, love, and share with us. Thank you for knowing that while writing might take place in isolation, literature thrives in a community. In partnership with you, this year we were able to welcome into our community the brilliant Roxane Gay, Antonya Nelson, Matthew Thomas, Rebecca Makkai, Emily Rapp, Mark Doty, Mat Johnson, and George Saunders, while also welcoming a myriad of new writers and readers of all ages and backgrounds.
We are deeply grateful that you’ve chosen Lighthouse as your literary home.
With heartfelt thanks and warmest wishes for the holiday season,
Andrea, Dan, Kate, Kim, Laurie, Meg, Mike, and Tiffany
