Dordt College is a place of renewal, and renewal often involves change. For Dordt, that change comes in the form of innovations and opportunities, such as those promised by our new Pro-Tech initiative.
Dordt's Pro-Tech (Professional and Technical) program, which will be launched in the fall of 2017, offers a two-year associate of science degree. For now, incoming Pro-Tech undergraduates can choose from either a manufacturing technology major or a farm operations and management major. But, there’s no telling how far this development will go and how many degree programs may be offered five, 10, or even 20 years down the road.
As far as we know, nowhere else can students gain access to these kinds of immersive, hands-on internships and experience a Christ-centered approach to education within the solid Christian community Dordt has always offered and will continue to offer its students.
Interested in how this decision and the growth of this program may affect you and your children?
Tune in to President Erik Hoekstra’s live Periscope broadcast on Thursday, June 9, at 8 p.m. CST for a 15-minute introduction to Pro-Tech, where he and Pro-Tech Director Joel Sikkema will outline the basics of the program. We invite you to join in the conversation and ask them your Pro-Tech questions.

David Lammers Art Collection on display
The Dordt College Department of Drt and Design is featuring highlights from David Lammers’ Art Collection in the Campus Center Art Gallery from May 18 to August 31. The show features student and professional artwork from 2004 to 2014, and all artwork has a direct connection with Dordt College.
Lammers began his collection in 2005, when he exchanged some of his artwork with a fellow Dordt student. Most of the pieces Lammers acquired are from students who had printmaking class with Professor Jake Van Wyk in 2008.
Disaster Shelter Competition helps students solve real-world problems
Dordt College construction management majors participated in the John Brown University 5th Annual Disaster Shelter Design Competition, sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, in April. The competition provides students with an opportunity to create practical solutions to real problems—like the current refugee crisis.
Each team of students designed and built a disaster shelter that could easily be transported and constructed, was spacious enough for a family of four, was culturally appropriate for the given situation, and cost less than $1,500 to reproduce. Dordt’s team placed fourth out of nine teams.
Dordt competes in Concrete Canoe Competition
Dordt College engineering students participated in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) regional Concrete Canoe Competition once again this year. Dordt’s team placed sixth out of nine teams, and placed ahead of both the Iowa State and the University of Iowa teams.
“Busy day-to-day educational schedules can work against planning ahead and seeing the big picture,” says Engineering Professor Justin Vander Werff. “A competition like this forces them to manage and navigate all aspects of a large project.”
