Nashville School of Law Receives Habitat for Humanity State Impact Award
The Nashville School of Law was presented with the Habitat for Humanity State Impact Award for the 2015 Outstanding Local Community Partnership of the Year for its legal clinic that helps Habitat families with legal documents and problems. State Representative John Ryan presented the award to professor John Lewis and Justice William Koch, coordinators of the clinic.
Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Earns Three National Awards
The Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (TBA YLD) won three Awards of Achievement at the American Bar Association 2015 Annual Meeting in Chicago on Aug. 1. The TBA YLD placed second in the diversity category for its spring program on helping diverse law students craft their resumes and practice for job interviews. The group also placed second in the comprehensive category, which recognizes projects and activities from the past bar year. The TBA YLD also received a special recognition award for its Access to Justice Week Legal Clinic Initiative, a statewide service project that produced 14 free legal clinics and educational seminars for Tennesseans.
Peer-Driven Youth Justice Program Saves $1 Million
Davidson County Juvenile Court Judge Shelia Calloway recently conducted training at Lipscomb University for the Peer-Driven Youth Justice Program, which offers an alternative to juvenile courts. Those who participated learned about court proceedings, including courtroom etiquette and sentence determination. Since its inception, the staff estimates that the program has saved more than $1 million by keeping juveniles out of the court system.
Administrative Office of the Courts Names Lawyers, Judges to Judicial Boards
On the Tennessee Supreme Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission, William Wray was appointed to serve the remainder of James Lauderback’s term. Judges Timothy Irwin, Alan Glenn and Betty Thomas Moore were reappointed to an additional term on the Judicial Ethics Committee. On the Board of Judicial Conduct, all members were reappointed with the exception of David Wedekind, who was replaced by Edward Phillips. 
Justice Sharon Lee Re-Elected as Chief Justice
Justice Sharon Lee was unanimously re-elected as chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court on Aug. 21. Lee has been a member of the Tennessee Supreme Court since 2008 and recently led the launch of the state’s first business court. 

Nashville Bar Foundation Names 25 Lawyers to Leadership Forum Class
The Nashville Bar Foundation (NBF) named 25 lawyers, who practice in Davidson County, to its Leadership Forum program. The NBF Leadership Forum is intended for lawyers with three to eight years of experience, aims to build relationships among attorneys from different backgrounds, and practices and encourages diversity in the practice of law. The nine-month professional development program will begin on Sept. 24 and will meet monthly through May 2016.
Vanderbilt Law School Names Program in Honor of Attorney George E. Barrett
The new George Barrett Social Justice Program will support Vanderbilt Law School students pursuing social justice careers. Barrett, a Nashville civil rights attorney, filed one of his most significant cases in 1968, Geier v. Tennessee, which resulted in the desegregation of Tennessee’s state universities.
Judge Andy D. Bennett Wins Outstanding Mentor Award
Tennessee Courts of Appeals Judge Andy D. Bennett received the student-nominated Outstanding Mentor award from Belmont University College of Law’s American Inn of Court. Bennett mentored two first-year law students by meeting monthly to discuss topics including legal writing and study skills.
