Justice Bivins Sworn in as Newest Member of Tennessee Supreme Court
On July 16, Jeffrey Bivins was installed as the newest member of the Tennessee Supreme Court at the formal investiture ceremony. Chief Justice Gary Wade was joined by Justices Connie Clark, William Koch and Sharon Lee at the ceremony at the Franklin Theatre. Gov. Bill Haslam administered the oath of office. 

Unlimited Surety Bond Not Required to Appeal 
On July 21, the Tennessee Supreme Court ruled that an unlimited surety bond is not required for an appeal of a civil case from General Sessions Court to Circuit Court. The court found in a 2007 Shelby County case ruling that a cash bond covering the amount of court costs and litigation taxes is enough to permit an appeal. The unanimous ruling also noted that courts can request additional security under state law if necessary. 
Haslam Appoints 3 to Workers' Comp Board 
Effective Aug. 1, Gov. Bill Haslam has appointed three Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board judges. Marshall Davidson of Goodlettsville will have a six-year initial term, David Hensley of Chattanooga will have a four-year term and Tim Conner of Knoxville will have a two-year term. The workers’ compensation appeals board reviews interlocutory and final orders entered by workers compensation judges. The Administrative Office of the Courts has more.
Journalist, Political Figure John Seigenthaler Dies
John Seigenthaler, legendary Tennessee journalist, political figure, intimate confidant to two near-presidents and fierce advocate for racial equality, died July 11 at his home surrounded by family. He was 86. Seigenthaler served as editor and publisher of the Tennessean for almost 30 years. Seigenthaler served as an advisor to former Attorney General Bobby Kennedy and former Vice President Al Gore as well as founding the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University in 1991.
John Seigenthaler is survived by his wife, Dolores; his son, John Michael Seigenthaler, an anchor for Al Jazeera America; and his grandson, Jack.
