Message From the CEO
Election Day
On Election Day, I took a late afternoon/early evening stroll around Washington, D.C. A friend was visiting from Paris and on this historic day, she wanted a photo in front of the White House and a look at some of the monuments. So, on this unseasonably warm afternoon we set out to enjoy the beauty and power of our Nation's Capital.
We took our photos in front of both sides of the White House and walked down the Mall past the Washington Monument towards the Lincoln Memorial. My friend told me how excited she was to be in Washington on the day that the United States could elect its first female President. I questioned her as to why this was so significant since women had been elected to their nation's highest elected position in Europe and elsewhere. She said: "Because the United States is the most powerful country in the world and this would make a statement everywhere.”
As evening set in, we continued our walk past the WWII Memorial, by the Reflecting Pool, to the Lincoln Memorial. As we ascended the steps to Lincoln's statue, we stopped to look back down the Mall, past the Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument to the Capitol dome. It was truly majestic. Indeed, it was powerful.
The Presidential election did not turn out the way many predicted it would. There is concern in some quarters and hope in others. Underneath it all, I can't stop believing that the fortitude and sublime beauty expressed by our nation's monuments will continue in our people going forward.

Launch of Generation to Generation Campaign
NHSA is proud to collaborate for the Generation to Generation Campaign (Gen2Gen), which is a five-year campaign to mobilize 1 million people over 50 to help young people thrive, and unite all ages to create a better future. Powered by Encore.org and with a strong coalition of partner organizations, this campaign will highlight opportunities for older adults to make a difference in the lives of young people, support innovative pilot programs, and demonstrate impact through sharing inspirational stories and best practices. Generation to Generation will shine the light on people and organizations already working across the generations and invite more to get involved. Learn more and join the campaign, alongside several other NHSA members.

Engaging Millennial Volunteers
Millennials and Generation Z are a lucrative donor and volunteer segment. With ever-changing interests, shorter attention spans and multi¬platform preferences, young volunteers present new challenges for nonprofit organizations. Join NHSA's Volunteer Development Peer Council Meeting on December 6 to learn how your organization can engage this critical target audience to earn a larger share of their spending and inspire cause champions. Additionally, the agenda will also include a preview of the 2017 National Summit on Volunteer Engagement Leadership where practitioners of volunteer administration will come together to discover together how to build a new national presence, tackle the issues they face, and maximize their skills as volunteer engagement experts to improve our nation’s communities.

Thematic stories unpack community or systemic drivers of problems and challenges in our communities that human services works to address. Where the episodic story focuses on a single individual and can invoke the belief that the individual’s situation resulted from his or her actions and choices, the thematic story sheds light on the broader themes and trends over time. This broader context is critical to better understanding the full scope of human services and what it provides to our communities.
