Judge Eblen to Retire After Nearly 50 Years on Bench
Ninth Judicial District Criminal Court Judge E. Eugene Eblen will retire at the end of 2015, having served almost 49 years on the bench, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. Eblen, who will be 80-years-old when retiring, says his retirement plans are still to be determined. Gov. Bill Haslam will appoint his replacement, who will serve at least until August 2016 when a special election will be held to fill the remaining six years of Eblen’s term. 

3 Nashville Law Firms Nominated as Healthiest Employers
Baker Donelson, Burr & Forman and Butler Snow are among 19 finalists for the Nashville Business Journal’s Healthiest Employers Award. Indianapolis-based Healthiest Employers LLC selected the finalists. Winners will be announced during a health fair and luncheon on August 18.
Veteran Civil Rights Attorney Speaks at Lipscomb University
On June 11, Fred Gray spoke at Lipscomb University as a part of the 2015 Law Camp. Gray represented Rosa Parks in her fight for equality in Montgomery, Alabama, and was Dr. Martin Luther King’s first lawyer. During his speech, Gray encouraged the campers to stand up for what they believe is right, regardless of their age. The 2015 Law Camp brought high school students from across the country to Nashville for a week of programs on legal issues and is sponsored by the TBA and Lipscomb’s Institute for Law. This year’s camp was focused on the development of key freedoms and the concept of equality under the law, with a focus on the Civil Rights Movement. 
7 Lawyers Named Finalists for Emerging Leader Award
On June 8, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and YP Nashville announced the finalists for the 2015 Nashville Emerging Leader Awards, according to The Tennessean. Lawyers among the group include Christopher W. Hayes with Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis and Michelle B. Walker with the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation, who were named in the Environment & Sustainability category, and five in the Legal Services category: Sarah Hannah, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings; Gabe Roberts, Tennessee Division of Health Care Finance and Administration; Joycelyn Stevenson, Littler Mendelson; Casey Gill Summar, Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville; and Todd A. Tressler II, Tressler & Associates.
Matt Sweeney to Chair National Judicial College
Former judge Matt Sweeney was named chair of the National Judicial College (NJC) board of trustees. Sweeney is currently a shareholder in the Nashville office of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC.

Bill Harbison Named Tennessee Bar Association President
Nashville lawyer Bill Harbison was named TBA’s president on June 19 at the Lawyers Luncheon during the TBA’s 134th annual convention in Memphis. Justice Jeffrey Bivins administered the oath of office. Also at the lunch, Harbison laid out his vision for the coming year. He spoke on the challenges facing the profession and concluded by noting “one thing that will not change is that the TBA will continue to serve as a clear and measured voice for the lawyers and judges in our state.”
