Dear Writer:
If you’ve taken a workshop at Lighthouse, then it won’t surprise you to learn that the instructors are the big ol’ beating heart of the organization. If Lighthouse was a speedboat, the instructors would be the motor. A sailboat: the sails. A person swimming in a cool lake on a hot summer day: the legs. Did we mention it’s hot outside?
The point is: Without the compassion and wisdom of our instructors, Lighthouse would be a sad, aloof little dinghy spinning circles in a vast sea of sharks and loneliness. Not a fan of mixed metaphors? We bet you learned that from one of our instructors.
This is your last chance to nominate your favorite Lighthouse instructor for the annual Beacon Award—a yearlong honor that comes with the instructor’s name eternally emblazoned on a fancy plaque, a cash prize, and all the good feels that overwhelm teachers when they’re finally recognized for their passion and commitment. Nominate here. Do it now. Submissions will close tomorrow at midnight
Now, It's Party Time
Writers have a long-standing reputation for throwing it down at parties. Let’s not think about why that might be. Instead… let’s party! You won’t want to miss these upcoming events at Lighthouse—where the conversation is almost as cerebrally stimulating as the booze.
Saturday, August 1 @6:00 PM: Don’t miss our yearly fellowship congratulations and celebration at the Writer’s Buzz: Alice Maxine Bowie Reading with Tessa Cheek! We’ll learn about the amazing projects Tessa’s been working on all year, including Write Denver, and we’ll honor the incoming fellow, Cynthia Wong, and runners-up.
Saturday, August 15 @6:00 PM: Join us for our annual Back-to-School Party + Beacon Award + Faculty Appreciation and come celebrate the start of a new school year and the incredible faculty who make our workshops such a success! It’s your chance to thank, roast, or read a slam poem about your instructor face-to-face. Plus—free pizza.
Sunday, August 2 @12:00 PM: This one's not at Lighthouse, but if you’re headed to the Denver County Fair this weekend, THE event to remember will be the poetry-contest finalists' reading taking place on the Arts/Geek Stage. Swing by the Lighthouse booth while you're in the writing mood.
Workshops Are Parties, Too (for your brain)
The next session of workshops begins the week of August 17. That means you still have time to sign up for some of our innovative offerings, such as "The Room"—Writing for TV’s One-Hour Drama with Sibyl Gardner, RAW—Dave Eggers Does Nonfiction with Helen Thorpe, Writing Apocalyptic Fiction with Alexander Lumans, Writing the Novella with Lindsey Drager, and much, much more.
We’re also pleased to announce that Eli Gottlieb, author of Best Boy, The Face Thief, Now You See Him, and The Boy Who Went Away, will be joining us on Friday, September 4 for his craft talk: Mechanics & Gearings of Long-Form Narrative. A free reception, reading, and Q&A will follow.
Last but not least, our Young Writers Program will host a weeklong intensive for girls, The Unbelievable Smell of Happiness, from August 10-14, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. There’s nothing more terrifying than young girls (ages 11-13) with nothing to do—let them write stories!
See you at the Denver County Fair,
The Lighthouse Party People
Write Denver continues with "To the Lighthouse" on August 8 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
Registration is now open for Boulder Story Builder, September 12 & 13 at the Boulder Public Library.
