Dear Members and Friends,
It’s been a privilege to be engaged with the National Assembly and its members, the best nonprofits in America, these past few months. I wrap up as “interim” and Lee Sherman takes over as CEO in early June. It has been a fun and, I must say, productive time. No surprise, though, since the Assembly has an incredibly involved and supportive board, staff, and partners, including our funders. I am heartened that the Board has selected such a fine executive to lead the organization. I plan on returning to consulting and enjoying life. Please stay in touch!
Sincerely,
Of note...
Department of Labor Overtime Pay Rule
The final rule was announced yesterday and will go into effect on December 1, 2016. The regulation increases the salary threshold under which Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)-covered employees are eligible for overtime pay from $23,660 to $47,476 per year. The threshold will automatically increase every three years based on the 40th percentile of full-time salaried workers in the lowest-wage region according to U.S. Census data. Nonprofits are not exempt from following this rule. DOL is holding a webinar for the nonprofit sector on June 7. Additionally, Independent Sector will host a webinar series to assist organizations with compliance under the new rule, and the National Council of Nonprofits is currently collecting data from nonprofit organizations to aid the development of implementation procedures for the sector.
Improving Employee Well-Being Through the Financial Stability First Model
The National Human Services Assembly (NHSA) recently release a discussion brief on Financial Stability First (FS1), a pilot project conducted in three human service agencies to determine whether financial navigators in the workplace could be deployed to assist low-wage employees. The goal was to create a foundation of financial stability through outreach, education and access to a range of financial products and services. Outcomes showed the value of intentional organizational efforts to work with low-wage employees to increase their financial stability has positive effects and increased employee confidence, skills, and well-being. The initiative was generously funded by MetLife Foundation. Download the brief.
Results from a survey of participants (above graphic) demonstrate that financial stability can be a struggle for many low-wage employees. FS1 outcomes indicate that low-wage employees benefit from intentional organizational efforts to improve financial health and overall well-being, uniquely positioning nonprofit employers to provide the resources and guidance their employees need to reach their potential.

Tip: Focus on the solution. It’s important for communications to focus on the solution up front—meaning don’t bury it at the end—and minimize talk about problems. Inundating communications with challenges and crisis language can leave the audience feeling that a problem is too big to solve.
