 Fort Lewis College is undoubtedly powered by place. FLC grounds itself in experiential learning, sustainability, and community engagement—all of which are rooted in the natural majesty, cultural history, and diverse communities of the Four Corners region.

Snow Studies Series: FLC's PRO 1 Avalanche Course

Colorado has the highest avalanche-related death toll in the nation. According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, almost 300 people have died from being caught in Colorado avalanches over the past 70 years. FLC's Outdoor Pursuits program is trying to mitigate that, offering a PRO 1 Avalanche Course in collaboration with the American Avalanche Institute.

1,000 miles, $10,000: FLC senior backpacks for Grub Hub Food Pantry

Cole Wilson, a senior studying Adventure Education, will hike the Grand Enchantment Trail in hopes of raising $10,000 for the Grub Hub Food Pantry, which provides free, nutritious foodstuffs to students, staff, and faculty.

A midwinter’s whirlwind ecotour with FLC SEEDS 

Members of FLC’s Strategies for Ecological Education, Diversity & Sustainability Club, or SEEDS, spent January 8-12, 2023, exploring Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. The student-led study abroad experience shed light on the ecological diversity of a destination known for its pineapple drinks and banana boats.

Akuel Kot, a senior studying Sports Administration, has been playing basketball every day since the seventh grade. Kot’s dedication to the game has since paid off. Standing at six-foot-two, he's the star guard on the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team—the number one team in the RMAC league.

  • The FLC men's basketball team climbed the Division II rankings to claim a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season title and capture the RMAC Tournament championship. The team received the No. 2 seed for the South-Central Regional Tournament at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. 

  • Misty Sandoval, a senior studying Public Health, is making an impact at FLC. She is the youngest member of the Native LGBTQ+/Two-Spirit Advisory Council for the Southwest Indigenous Women's Coalition. She decided to go to FLC because of the Public Health program's strong reputation. 

  • Manna Soup Kitchen has been providing soup to the Grub Hub Food Pantry since March 2022. The delicious partnership was forged by Manna's Chef Seanan Culloty and FLC Basic Needs Coordinator Stella Zhu.

  • The Center of Southwest Studies hosted an event with Alexandera Houchin, a nationally renowned ultra-endurance racer. Dubbed "A Conversation with Alexandera Houchin," Houchin discussed her career as a cyclist. Houchin is the current women's overall record holder for The Colorado Trail Race.

  • Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet and Colorado U.S. Representative Jason Crow introduced the Protect the West Act to make a $60 billion investment in Western forests. Julie Korb, professor of Biology, spoke in favor of the bill, saying that lawmakers "can no longer wait to invest in restoring and creating resilient forests and watersheds across the West."

  • FLC’s Black Student Union held a series of events for Black History Month to educate students about available resources and engage with the FLC community. BSU hosted events such as trivia, open houses, and seminars featuring FLC's Native American Center and guest speakers.

That's hawksome

Tim Murray (Psychology, '94) attempted to summit Mt. Everest (29,031 ft) last year. Every spring, about 500 mountaineers ascend its slopes in hopes of bagging the most famous peak in the world.
Murray made it to Camp IV at 26,000 feet, an accomplishment not many outdoor enthusiasts can claim.
