Message from the DirectorAnother successful month for our community. We held a fantastic event with Sydney Ideas, ' Big solutions on the nanoscale', where three of our top researchers spoke to over 450 attendees on their work in tackling some of the greatest challenges of our time. In case you missed it, be sure to catch the recording. In other positive news, many of our Members received significant awards, including the 'Prime Minister's Prize for Innovation', the top 40 'lifetime achievers in their field', the 'Highly Cited Researchers' list, the 'Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence', and more. Congratulations to all for their extraordinary achievements this year. Coming up, we are excited to host Dr Jeremy O'Brien, CEO and Co-Founder of PsiQuantum for our next Distinguished Lecture on tomorrow, Friday 3 December. We hope to see many of our community members there for our final public Sydney Nano event for the year, there is still time to RSVP!

'Big solutions on the nanoscale', Sydney Ideas event
Last week, we held 'Big solutions on the nanoscale' with Sydney Ideas. We had over 450 attendees via webinar & LinkedIn. Our researchers, Prof. Chiara Neto, Dr Shelley Wickham and Prof. Zdenka Kuncic spoke on how their teams are tackling some of the world's greatest challenges in health, water, neurology & more, as co-leads of a Sydney Nano Grand Challenge. The event was hosted by A/Prof. Alice Motion, and introductory address by Prof. Ben Eggleton. In case you missed it, catch up on YouTube. Stay tuned for the podcast.

Joint sustainability lab launched with Zhejiang University
The University of Sydney and Zhejiang University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a joint lab on sustainable environment, a collaborative effort by Sydney Nano, the Office of Global Engagement, and Engineering. The Lab is designed to promote multidisciplinary research in sustainable development, researchers will look at developing solutions to global problems such as environmental pollution remediation, ecosystem restoration, renewable and clean energy and ‘big data’ science. The Sydney arm will be led by Sydney Nano Member, Prof. Jun Huang. Read the full article.

A/Prof. Alice Motion has kicked off the Sydney Nano 'Early Career Researcher' Development node, 'Building a Research Group', the first development session in the series, facilitating great discussions & knowledge-sharing with researchers across the University.

The Australian has named Australia’s top 40 lifetime achievers in research, chosen for the consistent excellence of their work and the impact they have in their fields. Prime Minister's Prize for Innovation
Congratulations to Prof. Tony Weiss on receiving the 2021 Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation! The achievement recognises Prof Weiss' pioneering research and commercialisation of synthetic tropoelastin-based biomaterials, which can accelerate and improve the repair of human tissue. University spin-out company Gelion lists on London Stock Exchange
Renewable energy storage company, Gelion, founded by Professor Thomas Maschmeyer has started trading on the London AIM market to take battery chemistry developed at the University of Sydney to the world. Read the article.

$250,000 from Elon Musk to Sydney students for carbon removal
A team of University of Sydney students has won a US$250,000 prize, awarded by Elon Musk's Foundation and announced at COP26. With industry partners and an academic supervisor, they have developed a solar-powered unit that removes CO2 from the atmosphere. The University team, overseen by Prof. Deanna D’Alessandro from Sydney Nano & the School of Chemistry. The team are one of 23 winning teams. Congratulations! Read the full article.

2021 Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers List
Congratulations to Prof. Anita Ho-Baillie, Sydney Nano Deputy Director, on making the 2021 Highly Cited researcher list, along with 28 other University colleagues. The annual list identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. $15 million for innovative health and medical research
Congratulations to Prof. Joel Mackay from Sydney Nano & the Faculty of Science, on being awarded $829,000 for New approaches to cancer treatment through mRNA display. Prof. Mackay is among 18 University of Sydney researchers to be awarded an NHMRC Ideas Grant. Read the full article.

Sydney Spotlight: Dr Daniel Blinkhorn
Our newest Sydney Nano 'Artist in Residence', Dr Daniel Blinkhorn, was featured in the University Sydney Spotlight. Dr Blinkhorn was interviewed on his fascinating research, compositions that employ natural sounds alongside traditional musical instruments, as well as his work that examines a variety of ways in which to impart some of the science behind Sydney Nano's Grand Challenge, Advanced Capture of Water from the Atmosphere (ACWA), with the use of sound and music. Funding announcement: NSSN Grand Challenge Fund now open
The NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN) is calling on research, industry and government stakeholders to form collaborative proposals and apply for funding under round two of the NSSN Grand Challenges Fund. Grants of up to $100,000 per project will support the development of R&D projects that link industry or government partners with NSSN member universities to translate world-class research into impactful smart sensing solutions, either through commercialisation or operationalisation. The Fund has been established to promote the development of research aligned to the six NSSN Grand Challenges: ageing, bushfires, COVID-19, water; mining, and smart places and buildings.
