Workshops kick off next week at the Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE)! If you haven't secured your spot for the Working with Graduate Student Writers workshop (Part 1)there's still time. We're also looking ahead to the start of our Celebrating Faculty Writers Series. This semester, the series will focus on the logistics behind getting your academic work published at presses and journals.

Celebrating Faculty Writers (Part 1) 
This semester, the Celebrating Faculty Writers Series will focus on demystifying the publishing process at university presses.
For Part 1, Tim Lockridge (Computers & Composition Digital Press), James Bielo (Anthology of Contemporary North America) and Elizabeth Wardle (Writing Research, Policy, and Pedagogy) will share inside knowledge they've gained as editors for a university press series. Come for lunch and helpful conversation on how to craft  successful book proposals and handle contracts and reviews.

Miami students showcased their creativity and skill in the HWC's latest creative writing contest.
Winners announced in the Change of Seasons contest
Last Fall, the Creative Writing Special Interest Group (SIG) at the Howe Writing Center (HWC) held a creative writing contest focused on the theme Change of Seasons. The entries, which included fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, were reviewed by HWC faculty and staff. 
Congratulations to T. Mesnick, first prize winner for their poem "Pumpkin Patch" and to Alexander Benedict, runner-up for his poem "Fall as an Unsure Haircut."

Grad directors share lunch and ideas on writing instruction  
On Monday, Feb. 10, HCWE Associate Director Ann Updike and Grad Assistant Director Mandy Olejnik hosted graduate directors from across academic disciplines to strategize ways of making lasting change in their graduate curricula, with a particular focus on writing. Mandy shared insights about graduate student writing pedagogy from qualitative research done at Miami. 
This conversation will carry on throughout the Spring semester in the Working with Graduate Student Writers Workshop Series
