Happy Halloween Week, Pirates!

Halloween! (My favorite holiday!)

There are lots of fun Halloween-themed activities happening on campus this week! Kick off the weekend with an awesome performance by one of the nation’s most-requested hypnotists, Doug Thompson, on Friday night. Saturday afternoon, join Pirate Athletics and the Southwestern University Alumni Association Greater Georgetown Chapter at the tailgate before the football game for a trunk or treat. Then get ready for a spooky Saturday night with Student Activities featuring a free outdoor showing of The Conjuring, complete with candy bars and popcorn. You might even win your very own set of all three movies on DVD or two tickets to a haunted house! Mask & Wig is also hosting a Murder Mystery Party for the entire campus on Saturday. In addition to the Murder Mystery party, they’ll also have free food and a costume contest.

A Ghostly Sweet Treat Wednesday

I hope you’ll join me and the rest of the President’s Office staff for Wake Up Wednesday tomorrow morning. Stop by the Floyd and Annetta Jones Plaza to pick up breakfast (if you know me, you know there will be baked goods) and a cup of coffee on your way to class.

Need more sugar? The Captain will be back on the Academic Mall Wednesday afternoon for the Sweet Surprise. Costumes are encouraged!

Campus Sustainability Week

This week, Southwestern is hosting its third annual Campus Sustainability Week. Each day, the Office of Sustainability is hosting a special event on campus, from a pumpkin-themed farmers market to a screening of The Human Element. There’s even a Halloween Fair on Saturday featuring yummy vegan, vegetarian, and meat-based food options from 600 Degrees Pizza and Project Pollo as well as spooky and groovy music, yard games, and a sustainable costume contest! To Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Raquel Moreira who has won the 2021 Bonnie Ritter Outstanding Feminist Book Award from the National Communication Association's Feminist and Gender Studies Division for her book Bitches Unleashed: Performance and Embodied Politics in Favela Funk (Peter Lang, 2021). Also, congratulations to Associate Professor of History Jessica Hower who was elected a fellow of the Royal Historical Society in recognition of her contribution to historical scholarship. Well done!

Booster Shots

Did you know that COVID-19 booster shots are now available for the following Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine recipients who completed their initial series at least 6 months ago:

65 years and older
Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings
Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions
Age 18+ who work in high-risk settings
Age 18+ who live in high-risk settings

If you fall into any of these categories, consider getting your booster shot. As a reminder, anyone can get vaccinated at no charge at most pharmacies. The vaccinating pharmacy closest to Southwestern is the CVS at the corner of University Ave and Austin Ave. This CVS administers the Pfizer vaccine, and, as with many pharmacies, you can schedule an appointment online. There are several other vaccine providers in Georgetown, including Walgreens and HEB; see this map for a list. Vaccine providers across the country can be found by using the search tool at vaccines.gov.
