Growing Future Leaders and a Garden at the Phyllis Wheatley Center
This summer has certainly looked different for the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center
, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff was saddened to make the difficult decision to cancel the annual Summer Kids in Play Program, which serves 50 youth, ages 5-14, in a fun and learning filled setting during the summer.
However, staff were determined to still host our spring 2020 Reach Interns, as their experience had been cut-short with school being cancelled. Our Reach Interns, high school aged boys and girls, have been showing up three days a week and cleaning, cooking for neighbors, distributing produce donations from Beardsley Farms
, tending to our own Community Garden and so much more! Having youth in the building this summer, even if only a handful, has brought about a small sense of normalcy to the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center.
