Growing Future Leaders and a Garden at the Phyllis Wheatley Center
This summer has certainly looked different for the
YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff was saddened to make the difficult decision to cancel the annual Summer Kids in Play Program, which serves 50 youth, ages 5-14, in a fun and learning filled setting during the summer.
However, staff were determined to still host our spring 2020 Reach Interns, as their experience had been cut-short with school being cancelled. Our Reach Interns, high school aged boys and girls, have been showing up three days a week and cleaning, cooking for neighbors, distributing produce donations from
Beardsley Farms, tending to our own Community Garden and so much more! Having youth in the building this summer, even if only a handful, has brought about a small sense of normalcy to the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center.
