Ed Martin

Message from the Associate Vice-President and Director of Extension

Over the past year, we had several new hires across the Extension system in Arizona, and there are more to come.

As these people join our family, I hope everyone welcomes them. As we all know too well, the University of Arizona has a particular way of doing things, and it takes some time to learn it all. We are working hard at the State office to bolster our onboarding and orientation for these new personnel, but nothing beats an in-office mentor. Whether it is a faculty member, staff member, peer, supervisor, or volunteer, everyone new to the system needs a bit of help, and all of us should do what we can to make them feel welcome and help them succeed in their new position.

Although it has been over 30 years since I began at the University of Arizona, I know that much of my success is due to those who had some patience and some words of advice and took it upon themselves to ensure I knew I was welcome to be part of our Extension team.

Save the Date – Ed Talk November 15

Kirti Mathura

In Memoriam: Kirti Mathura, Assistant in Extension, Maricopa County

We are saddened to share with you the passing of Kirti Mathura, Assistant in Extension with Maricopa County Cooperative Extension. Kirti was most recently overseeing the Smartscape program in Maricopa County.

Kirti was an accomplished writer and a true champion of horticulture in Arizona for many years. She will be best remembered for her work at Extension and the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. She was indeed a friend to everyone and had a love for plants. With over 30 years of working in Arizona horticulture, she positively impacted thousands of lives and helped spread the joy of gardening. Her work to improve the Smartscape program was exemplary. Kirti was kind, dear colleague to many in Cooperative Extension and a true friend to many of us. She will be missed by many.

Prayers and thoughts go out to her friends and family.

Artificial Insemination Clinic - Camp Verde

Artifical insemination has been shown to improve the genetic quality of a herd, increase consistency and value to a calf crop, eliminate the need to purchase, house, and feed a full bull battery, shorten breeding and calving season, and generally improve the profitability of a livestock production operation.

If you are interested in adding an AI program into your livestock operation, please join us for our 2.5-day AI Clinic at our UA Experimental Ranch, V Bar V, near Camp Verde November 17-19, 2023. Our experienced staff will guide you through the entire AI process and will include hands-on practice including live animals. Cost is $800, first-come basis, non-refundable, and includes a take-home AI kit ($350 value), AI manual, flash drive with all the presentations, and lunch on Sat. and BBQ on Sunday. Registration is limited to 12 participants.

Please contact Sierra Sheeks at the Yavapai County Cooperative Extension Office, (928) 445-6590. For further questions, please contact Andrew Brischke (928) 753-3788 or brischke@cals.arizona.edu

WRRC Water Webinar: Capacity, Performance, and Collaborative Planning in Water Governance

Public water systems (PWSs) – facing pressures from climate and land-use changes – must adapt to ensure continued safe and secure supply to customers. The ability to provide a consistent, safe water supply is determined by PWSs’ internal capacity and the collaborative approaches used to address water resource challenges that span service area boundaries. Quality collaboration needs to reflect diverse representation and interests. This WRRC Water Webinar presentation will discuss what motivates actors to come to the table before examining tools that can be used to evaluate representation in decision-making, as well as the capacity and performance of PWSs. The discussion will conclude with considerations for Arizona's water supply future as this relates to agriculture, urbanization, and energy.

When: Noon – 1 p.m. (Arizona time), Thursday, November 2
Speaker: Emily Bell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Public Administration and Policy, School of Public and International Affairs, University of Georgia
