A Message for the New Year...

As we close out 2017, we begin to set goals and priorities for 2018. Sure, there are the usual resolutions: work out regularly, make time with your family a top priority, stop eating like an eight  year old and embrace fruits and vegetables (or is that just me?). You can also set a goal that will help your daily mindset, the planet, and your health: trying out alternative commuting methods.
Now, when we set yearly goals, we tend to bite off more than we can chew right away.
"I am biking to work every day, even in the snow."
"I am going to take transit everywhere and not use my car for a month."
In the end, we wind up driving alone everyday because we feel overwhelmed by the task of changing our behavior in one try.
So...let's start slowly.
In January, try an alternative commuting method (carpool, vanpool, telework, transit, biking, or walking) one day per week, or twice this month if that's more your speed. If that works, try twice per week, or three times a month in February.
The point is to start with small and achievable tasks and be kind to yourself when progress is slow, because slow progress towards your goal is still progress.
When you are ready to plan out your alternative route to work, Bethesda Transportation Solutions is here to help. You can peruse our website, or call our office at 301-656-0868 and chat with our friendly and knowledgable staff. We are here to help you make a change in your life...one step, or bus ride, at a time.

Commuter Connections Employer Recognition Awards

Each year, Commuter Connections (part of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments) recognizes companies around the Washington region who are doing great things for their employees to help them get out of their cars and onto transit or into carpools and telework. Commuter Connections is currently seeking nominations for their Annual Employer Recognition Awards for companies who are leaders in the following categories:
  • Incentives - Providing benefits that make using alternative transportation modes easier, and more attractive to employees, than driving alone, including the following:

    •  pre-tax transit and vanpool passes
    •  preferred or discounted parking for carpools and vanpools
  • Marketing - Developing creative methods to promote alternative commuting options to employees.
  • Teleworking - Initiating or enhancing a successful telework program for employees.
Bethesda has a proud tradition of nominating many companies for regional recognition. If you would like for your company to be considered, please contact Susanna Parker at BTS - sparker@bethesda.org 301-656-0868 X126.  Susanna will help you draft your company’s nomination using information in your Traffic Mitigation Plan.
