Register Today: Muscogee Teach-in on the Quad
| |
Friday, October 28, 2:30-5:00 p.m., Atlanta Campus Academic Quad
Join the Emory University Indigenous Language Path working group and leaders, singers, storytellers, and artists from the Muscogee Nation, for a teach-in on the Atlanta Campus Academic Quad. Light refreshments, including soft pretzels, caramel corn, and pumpkin pie will be served as well as iced tea and hot apple cider.
The program includes:
- Welcome and opening remarks by Muscogee Nation Second Chief Beaver and President Randall of the College of the Muscogee Nation
- Muscogee hymn singing
- Cultural labs led by Britteny Cuevas — owner of Four LOCV, which specializes in Native American, Southeastern Indigenous arts
- Muscogee storytelling by Mvhayv Gracine Hicks and Mvhayv Rebecca Barnett from the Mvskoke Language Program
- A stomp dance, led by Rev. Chebon Kernell

Indigenous Peoples Sunday at Beloved Community Worship

Join in Beloved Community's Indigenous Peoples Sunday Worship with preacher Rev. Chebon Kernell. The Rev. Chebon Kernell, an ordained elder in the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference of The United Methodist Church, is the executive director of the denomination's Native American Comprehensive Plan. He is an enrolled member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and is of Muscogee Creek heritage.

Indigenous Language Path Listening Sessions

All are invited to learn about and provide input into a university-wide project to develop physical reminders and rituals on Emory’s Oxford and Atlanta campuses to honor Muscogee language and knowledge as the indigenous language and knowledge of this land.
Please join us for open engagement sessions with the Native-led consulting firm KAI and representatives of the Muscogee Nation.

Día de los Muertos Celebration
Tuesday, November 1, 6:00 p.m., Asbury Circle
Join Centro Latinx, Latinx Student Organization, and OSRL for a night of celebration and remembrance. Participants will have the opportunity to make an ofrenda to remember a loved one and help to construct the altar. Live music and food will also be provided.

Emory University's very own Buddhist Chaplain, The Venerable Priya Rakkhit Sraman was interviewed by the Harvard Divinity School on Ethical Leadership in Action. Here is a snippet of the interview:
"HDS: In the Buddhist community, including those from other faith traditions who are exploring tenets of Buddhism, what interests and/ or struggles have you seen with regard to practicing meditation and pursuing mindfulness?
SRAMAN: Among participants in our campus gatherings, I have witnessed an interest in expanding mindfulness and meditation...When I first joined Emory, our weekly meetings reflected a panel format, where everyone waited their turn to ask me a question. However, I transformed the space from an independent consultation to a collaborative discussion. In an active Q&A, the community connects with one another."

Homecoming and Family Weekend with OSRL: Beloved Community Worship and Voices of Inner Strength
ORSL hosted multiple events for alumni and familes over Homecoming and Family weekend including prayer, puja, meditation, worship, and a fun affinity tent on the academic quad.
On Sunday, October 23, Beloved Community Worship was an especially joyous celebration with 70 alumni, families, and students. Many thanks to The Rev. Deborah M. Nutt 99B for preaching and to the Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir for singing in the service.
Seeing so many alumni, families, and students in Cannon Chapel reminds us of the importance of Beloved Community and all of our spiritual communities in creating a spiritual space of belonging for Emory students over the generations. Learn more about Beloved Community here.

Understanding Judaism and Dismantling Antisemitism: Professional Development Series for Students, Staff, and Faculty

This session will focus on the undergraduate core principles of Judaism and exploring ways support practicing students, colleagues, and patients. Also, this session will highlight strategic to recognize and address antisemisitm as our community strives to support religious diversity.
Rabbi Jordan Braunig serves as the Jewish Chaplain in OSRL at Emory University and seeks to be a resource to the diverse, robust, and inclusive Jewish community on campus. he received his master's from Hebrew College.

14th Annual Jacob M. Rothschild Memorial Lecture

This year's lecture will feature Prof. George J. Sánchez of the University of Southern California (USC) as the speaker for this year’s Rothschild Lecture, which is titled “’What’s Good for Boyle Heights is Good for the Jews’: Creating Multiracialism in East Los Angeles During the 1950s.”
This lecture will discuss the creation of a multicultural radicalism in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles during the 1950s. This new relationship between the Jewish and Mexican American communities took place during an exodus of Jews to Southern California’s white suburbs after World War II, while leftists of all races sought refuge in Boyle Heights to escape the growing conservatism of McCarthyism.

Students for Zero Waste Conference
Wednesday, November 9-Sunday, November 13
The Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN) is hosting a Students for Zero Waste (SZW) Conference, which brings together students, staff, industry innovators, activists, and community members from across the country each Fall. Since 2014, SZW has served as a space for community-building and solution sharing to push the Zero Waste Movement forward. It prioritizes “walking the walk” of Zero Waste and centering the needs of those most impacted by the Waste Crisis and systems of oppression.
SZW 2022 will be running in a hybrid format from November 9-13! Tune in to our digital conference platform for live-streamed sessions, events, and student panels. Additionally, there will be small in-person gathering with local campuses in Philadelphia from November 11-13. Register here.
