R for lunch: Functions and Iteration
Friday, September 29, 12:30 - 1:30 pm Eastern
FOR loops? Maybe FOR loops are a bit dated. Let’s surf past the next level and apply custom functions to larger quantities of data while using fewer coding steps.
R for Lunch is a one-hour lunch-time series designed to help people learn R for reproducible computational thinking. Presented by Data Science Librarian John Little. Registration is required.

An Introduction to Reproducible Research Practices
Wednesday, October 11, 10:00am - 12:00 pm Eastern
This workshop will introduce the concept of “reproducibility” and foundational strategies that can increase the reproducibility of your work, particularly related to organization, documentation, literate coding techniques, version control, and archiving data and code for future access and use.
We will also present the TIER protocol, as a tool that facilitates reproducible research. In the second half of the workshop we will present a potential end-to-end reproducible workflow using Git, RStudio, Binder, and Zenodo to demonstrate some of the concepts in practice. This event is open to non-Duke participants.
Registration is required.

UNIV103: Let’s Talk About Digital You explores the technology shaping our digital experiences and their ethical and societal impacts. Using interactive lectures, workshops, and discussions, the course introduces Duke students to a variety of headline-making technologies and their implications.
Fourteen Duke faculty members will lead seven modules on topics like AI art, large language models, and AI in healthcare and business. Each module's first week teaches a technology through lectures and hands-on workshops, followed by a week on its ethical and societal implications.
The course fosters critical thinking, helping students understand the current complex digital world and adapt to its rapid evolution. It challenges them to consider trade-offs, challenges, and opportunities in personal, professional, and systemic digital experiences. Students will collectively engage with tough ethical and technological questions, envisioning new, creative, socially responsible uses for these technologies.
Registration begins November 1.
