Sophie Billadeau ’29, a first-year student from Minnetonka, Minnesota, is quickly building a memorable college experience at Puget Sound. A graduate of a small charter school where she was involved in theater and served as president of the National Honor Society, she’s wasted no time in immersing herself in campus life as a member of the university’s Honors Program in Consciousness, Creativity, and Meaning. Now, as one of 20 inaugural recipients of the Pohlad Family Scholarship, she is pursuing her passion for the Classics while writing for the student newspaper The Trail, and getting outside her comfort zone while exploring the Pacific Northwest.

Protecting Coastal Communities
|
In her role as director and co-founder of the Lowlander Center, Kristina Peterson ’72 was quoted in a Daily Mail article about the effects of coastal erosion in Louisiana on Native tribes. The Lowlander Center has been working to rebuild homes on tribal land to withstand future hurricanes. So far, they’ve rebuilt or repaired 13 homes in the community of Pointe-au-Chien.
“We know that doing just one home in a community doesn´t make the community safe. It´s only safe if the whole community is included in raising that level of safety,” said Peterson.

The event was hosted in conjunction with our civic engagement sponsor, the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber, and our media sponsor, KNKX. Watch a recording of the event.
