Promise & Pitfalls of Artificial Intelligence
|
Ariela Tubert, professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy, has long been interested in the ethics of artificial intelligence. Since 2022, Tubert and her spouse, fellow philosophy prof Justin Tiehen, have shared the James M. Dolliver National Endowment for the Humanities distinguished professorship to study the intersection of humanities and A.I., and they have also received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Arches recently sat down with Tubert to talk about the pros and cons of this technology.

Puget Sound chemistry professors Eric Scharrer, Luc Boisvert, Emily Tollefson, and Johanna Crane and biology professor Oscar Sosa, in collaboration with Asst. Prof. Kelly Kim of the University of Washington-Tacoma, received a $394,988 grant from the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation program for a new 400 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer.
NMR spectroscopy is a critical tool that provides detailed information about the structure of chemical compounds. The new spectrometer will offer increased sensitivity, open up advanced research avenues, and provide hands-on educational opportunities for students enrolled at Puget Sound, UWT, and Tacoma Community College.
