1. Customize your Canvas dashboard. |
You may want to choose which courses to display on your Canvas dashboard. Each term's new courses are automatically shown, but you can hide courses you aren't currently teaching by customizing the display.
|
2. Check due dates & content settings. |
Your spring course content has likely been copied from a different Canvas course shell. Now is an excellent time to check your due dates. Have they been updated? Look over your content, discussions, quizzes, assignments, and grades - does anything need to be adjusted?
|
3. Prepare to record initiation of attendance |
Beginning Fall 2023, all instructors have been required to record initiation of attendance for each student registered in their classes in order to comply with federal Title IV regulations. Initiation of attendance must be recorded in the Class List & Initiation of Attendance link in Banweb by the end of the second week of the term. Students you have not reported as initiating attendance in the first two weeks may be required to return a portion of their financial aid.
|
4. Move content into your course shell and publish your course! |
Spring course shells are ready for you to add content from previous terms or build new content. And finally, remember to publish your course at the start of the term. Students can only access your Canvas course site if you have published it!

Zoom runs best when you’re using the most up-to-date version. Make Sure Your Zoom Application Is Up to Date. If you’ve never used your Media Space account, log in at least once. This allows automatic copies of your Zoom meetings to be stored there. Here's how to log into Media Space.
If you’re holding scheduled Zoom meetings with your class, you may want to schedule your meetings within Canvas. This will create Zoom meeting links for your course that students can access directly in Canvas. See: Using Zoom with Canvas.
Explore the complete Canvas Course Checklist for a full catalog of personal and course Canvas settings you should check before your spring classes start!

Email Templates for the Start of Term |
Many students are anxious for information about their classes before the term starts. By communicating early, you can help establish an encouraging online environment and alleviate some of their anxiety. Use these templates to craft a message you’ll send to students as or before the term starts. Consider also adding a short introduction paragraph or video!
