Pediatrics Faculty Newsletter — June 2018
From the Chair
As we wrap up another successful academic year, it's nice to reflect on the department's accomplishments on many fronts, including continued growth in our research funding, several high-profile research publications, implementation of EPIC, growth in our outreach and telemedicine programs, recognition of our impressive faculty in several national and international venues, and sustained excellence in our educational programs.

In this issue of the department newsletter, we highlight new Turner-Hazinski scholars, Katherine Dodd Faculty Scholars, and the many accomplishments of our faculty at the international Pediatric Academic Societies meeting in May. We also share the exciting news about the three VUMC faculty awards at the spring faculty meeting - an impressive showing for our department faculty. Other articles illustrate the important work of our clinical leaders in expanding our clinical outreach efforts and in aligning our efforts to support departmental pillar goals.

June gives us the opportunity to launch our residents and fellows on the next phase of their careers. As you review the list of where they are all going, I'm sure you'll be impressed by their many accomplishments. These milestones give us all a chance to appreciate our trainees, as well as to acknowledge the superb mentoring and teaching our faculty provides for them.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy summer and looking forward to embarking on another successful year for the Department on July 1!

Pediatric Outreach Medicine
In January, 2018, the Department of Pediatrics launched a new division dedicated to providers who are spreading pediatric care throughout the region. Pediatric Outreach Medicine, led by Kris Rehm, MD, SFHM, is the academic home for providers working in After Hours, Primary Care in Smyrna, Williamson Medical Center, and at the Sumner Regional Medical Center in the Level I NICU. These pediatricians help families receive high quality care closer to home. Read more here.
Vanderbilt School of Medicine Awards
Each year, the School of Medicine honors faculty members for Excellence in Teaching, Outstanding Contributions to Research, and Clinical Service. Four individuals from Pediatrics were awarded for their highly-valued work. Barron Patterson, associate professor of Pediatrics, and David Johnson, assistant professor, received the Denis O’Day Award for their innovative design and implementation of curriculum for Children’s Hospital. Aida Yared, assistant professor of Pediatrics, received the Michael Rodriguez Award for her enthusiastic and knowledgeable teaching in a clinical setting. The Anderson Spickard Award went to William Walsh in recognition of his impactful clinical service. Katherine Dodd Scholars

The Faculty Scholars Program is named for Katherine Dodd, MD, a member of the Vanderbilt faculty from 1926-1944, who represented the ideal clinician and educator. The program helps faculty members develop and enhance their skills as clinicians and educators and provides an opportunity to conduct scholarly research, conduct and evaluate an educational project, or implement and evaluate a clinical or quality improvement project in an area of interest to their clinical area or to medical education. 2018-2020 recipients:

Alexandra Borst, MD, Assistant Professor, Hematology/Oncology

Girish Hiremath, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Gastroenterology

Jonathan Hemler, MD, Assistant Professor, Allergy, Immunology, and Pulmonary

Vanderbilt Initiative for the Study of Antimicrobial Resistance Drivers
An interdisciplinary program to study antimicrobial resistance drivers within the Vanderbilt School of Medicine has received a grant through the Trans-Institutional Programs Initiative (TIPS).
Leigh Howard, MD, MPH, associate professor of Pediatrics and Carlos Grijalva, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Health Policy are the lead faculty on the initiative. The grant awards $200,000 over 2-3 years and aims to bring together collaborators of all disciplines to address antimicrobial resistance in the U.S. and abroad.
The project will place Vanderbilt at the forefront of efforts to disseminate awareness, educate and identify effective strategies to reduce the global threat of antimicrobial resistance.
Three from Department Graduate from Quality Academy
Quality Academy at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is a year-long course designed to teach quality improvement (QI) principles and science to provider, nursing, and administrative leaders through project-focused and didactic learning. Participants envision, create, and lead a team to complete a robust QI project focused on improving one or more of the following: patient outcomes, hospital or department goals, value by reducing waste, efficiency, or USNWR reporting.

As the Department works to have trained QI faculty from every Division, Quality Academy Cohort 3 (2018-19) participants will be Drs. Debra Braun-Courville (Adolescent Medicine), Paul Dressler (Developmental Medicine), and David Parra (Cardiology). For Cohort 4 (2019-2020), we will solicit applications from all faculty next spring. Read more about this year's QI projects here.

Pediatric Scientist Development Program Fellows
Kristen Nobel, MD, PhD, and Amanda Clark, MD, have been named 2019-2020 Pediatric Scientist Development Program fellows under the aegis of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs.
Nobel earned a BS from Vanderbilt University and completed her MD and PhD at Meharry Medical College. She was a pediatric resident at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and is currently a first year neonatology fellow at Vanderbilt. Nobel’s fellowship project aims to define the role of fetal and maternal macrophages in Group B streptococcal ascending chorioamnionitis. Her co-mentors are Drs. David Aronoff and Jennifer Gaddy.
Clark earned a BA at Yale University and completed her MD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is currently a Clinical Fellow in Neonatology at Vanderbilt and will be conducting two years of research in Pediatric Nephrology at Children’s Hospital, Boston. Clark’s two-year PSDP fellowship will be followed by a clinical fellowship as she pursues her goal to become a clinical scientist. Clark’s fellowship project addresses the role of epigenetics in the renal response to podocyte injury.
Global Health Education Module

Along with a variety of other scholarly projects, the GH AC is developing educational modules for future residents to use prior to overseas electives. When utilizing a variety of educational options, such as those provided by CUGH and others, the cohort found that the modules were inconvenient with their busy schedules and did not always provide skills specific to their expected experiences. The group decided to develop their own. Their first module deals with Malnutrition, and was created by the GH AC’s first graduating member, Rachel Roberts, MD. Find an almost final version of the module here. Each member of the cohort will lead the development of his or her own module, so keep an eye out for new developments.
Pediatric Academic Societies Reception
Thanks to everyone who came to the PAS reception! We had a great time welcoming more than 75 alumni, friends, and current members of the Department of Pediatrics faculty. We celebrated the research and educational contributions of everyone and enjoyed a wonderful time of community-building.
Becoming a Better Educator Series
The Department of Pediatrics will be hosting its third annual summertime series of presentations, “Becoming a Better Educator,” to help busy clinicians become more effective teachers in clinical settings. The presentations are held on Mondays throughout the summer from 12:00–1:00 in the Wadlington conference room. Faculty from all professions, fellows, and residents are welcome to attend. View the schedule here.
