This Week at the Tutorium |
|
|
You might see some new smiling faces around Addams Hall. Our student workers are students studying here at UIC just like you. When they are not studying, they help out in the office with miscellaneous tasks, social media and "man the front desk". If you see one of our student workers, say hi and welcome them to the Tutorium.

|
- Where is home for you?
- Home for me is where my family and loved ones are.
- What are you majoring in?
- Data Science with Business Analytics.
- What is your favorite thing about UIC?
- A wide campus with a lot of diversity.
- If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
- To control the flow of time and to become unseen.
- What do you like most about being a student worker and why?
- It gives me the opportunity to gain practical experience while studying. It also gives me a chance to help others.
- What advice do you have for students here at the Tutorium?
-
Learning is not a race; it is a journey, and everyone has their own pace for covering their journey, so take your time and enjoy the process. Tutors are not mind readers, and there is no such thing as a silly question here, except maybe, "Can I skip finals?"😉. So ask questions. We are here to help you out.

Podcast Power!!
The Presentation Skills students in ELSI 083 created a podcast to let other students know how this class could improve their English speaking and listening skills.
It turns out that producing a podcast in English is a great way to focus on giving information in a conversational style. Go ahead and have a listen! The podcast is about 12 minutes long, and while you listen, remember that the whole thing is unscripted!! The students prepared a general outline and did a rehearsal recording; beyond that, they are "winging it!" (Listen to the podcast if you're not sure what it means to "wing it.") To listen to the podcast, click here.
Students in this class were Eri Uryu (euryu@uic.edu) and Mansour Almalki (malmal2@uic.edu). Unfortunately, our 3rd student Natalie, was ill on the final day of class and so could not participate, but you can still ask her about it! (hlin81@uic.edu)

We are delighted to have new students join our intensive English language program. If you see their beautiful faces around campus, please introduce yourself and say hello. You might be the friend they need to feel right at home.

Did you know that yesterday, March 9, was Daylight Savings Time? This means that sunrise and sunset will be one hour later. Now, you can go for a walk after dinner, and it won't feel like nighttime.
Your clocks should have already moved forward one hour. However, if the time on your clock is the same, you'll need to move your clock one hour ahead, or you'll be one hour late for class today!
Most smartphones will automatically change their time. Here are some clocks that need to have their time turned forward 1 hour: Microwave clock, Wall clock, Clock radio/alarm, Car clock.

Types of College Admissions |
|
|
There are at least seven different types of college admissions. It’s important to understand the differences when you start your college or university applications.
|
-
Regular Admission: There is a deadline for applications, and all of the applications are reviewed after that deadline. All applications that are on time have equal chances of being accepted depending on their qualifications.
- Rolling Admission: Applications are reviewed when they are received, and acceptance letters are sent soon after. Late applications will have less chance of being accepted.
-
Open Admission: Almost all applications that meet the requirements are accepted. It is more common in community colleges.
- Early Decision: Application deadlines are very early; applicants must attend that school if accepted. Be sure to know all the details of this agreement!
-
Early Action: Apply early, find out if you are accepted, and choose from all your early action possibilities. Be sure to know all the details of this agreement!
- Early Evaluation: This is NOT an acceptance. Applications will be reviewed early and students will be told if they will likely be accepted.
-
Deferred Admission: Get accepted, then put it off for a year. Be sure to know all the details of this agreement!
