Bike Rides for Emeriti and Retirees

SB Emeriti Association presents an ongoing series of bike rides for emeriti and retirees on Tuesday mornings from 9 am to @ 11:30 am. Next rides are October 6 and November 3.

Meet at the east end of Shoreline Park parking lot above the Harbor for a 15-mile ride. Breakfast location will probably be Jeannine's, but riders choose.

UCSB Emeriti Association Presents a Webinar for Emeriti & Retirees with Professor Emeritus Rich Appelbaum, on Thursday, October 8 at 4 pm: "Who Gets to Live in Santa Barbara?"

Since retiring, I have moved from the global to the local – from studying China's high-tech turn to working with local groups in the city of Santa Barbara, combining research and activism to address the city's housing crisis. On January 1st rent stabilization - a moderate version of rent control - will take effect for the city of Santa Barbara. This has been a divisive issue, passionately pushed by Latino/a organizations and tenants' groups, vehemently opposed by rental property owners. Is this a solution or just a band-aid? Will building more housing solve the problem? How do we balance Santa Barbara's unique environmental qualities with the need to affordably house the people who work here? In this talk, I'll give the big picture (and occasionally get into the weeds) to lay out
the issues and what has been done to address them.

Richard P. Appelbaum, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus and former MacArthur Foundation Chair in Global and International Studies and Sociology at UCSB.  He received his B.A. from Columbia University, M.P.A. from Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs, and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago. He has been co-Principal Investigator (and served on the Executive Committees of) many National Science Foundation Centers, most recently the Center for Nanotechnology in Society (2006-2016), where he led an international research group focusing on China’s rise as a science and technology power. He has served on Boards of Directors for a number of social justice organizations, including CLUE-Santa Barbara (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice), where he heads the Housing Justice Workgroup; Santa Gray Panther Network; Fund for Refugee Initiatives/Chad Relief Foundation; and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.
