| Changes Coming to NIH Applications and Peer Review in 2025
These changes include updates to the peer review and submission of most research project grants, fellowships, and training grants; common forms for NIH biographical sketch and current and pending (other) support; updated instructions for reference letters; and the transition to FORMS-I application instructions. Although each of these initiatives has specific goals, they are all meant to simplify, clarify, and/or promote greater fairness towards a level playing field for applicants throughout the application and review process. Tips for applicants
- Verify whether the activity code for your target funding opportunity is impacted and identify your target due date.
- If your activity code is impacted by the new framework and your target due date is on or after January 25, 2025, pay extra attention to the opportunity you use to apply.

| NIAID Financial Management Plan
Competing investigator-initiated awards will be funded at 90 percent of approved funding level with start dates reset by one month. This excludes fellowship (F), training (T), career development (K), and small business (SBIR/STTR) awards, and awards funded with non-direct appropriations (e.g., emergency supplemental COVID appropriations), which will be funded with no reduction to the approved funding level. | NCI Funding Policy
NCI will generally fund both categorical and SNAP non-competing grants at 95% of the committed level. This policy applies to all grants, with the exception of the NRSAs, Career, Cancer Education, Continuing Education, P30 Cancer Centers, Conference, AIDS related grants, International Research Training Grants, Small Grants, Research Specialist, Pathway to Independence, SBIR, and STTR awards, which will be funded at committed levels. | NIH Data Management (DMS) & Sharing Plan
The NIH Data Management & Sharing DMS Policy applies to all research, funded or conducted in whole or in part by NIH, that results in the generation of scientific data.
Under the DMS policy, NIH expects that investigators and institutions:
- Plan and budget for the managing and sharing of data
- Submit a DMS plan for review when applying for funding
- Comply with the approved DMS plan

Funding Opportunities by Agency
American Cancer Society
Discovery Boost Grants (DBG) high-risk, high-reward exploratory cancer research. Awards are for up to 2 years with $135,000 a year for direct costs, plus 10% allowable indirect costs. Next submission deadlines: 10/15/24 and 04/01/25.
Mission Boost Grants (MBG) Stage I Mission Boost: $135,000/year for two years direct costs, plus 10% indirect costs. Stage II Mission Boost: Applicants may propose up to 18 months and $545,000 for direct costs, plus 10% indirect costs. Next submission deadlines: 10/15/24 and 04/01/25.
Research Scholar Grants Awards are for up to 4 years with up to $215,000/year for direct costs, plus 10% allowable indirect costs. Next submission deadlines: 10/15/24 and 04/01/25.

American Heart Association
2025 Innovative Project Award $100,000/year including 10% indrects for two years. Pre-proposal due 12/05/24. Full application by invitation: 03/06/25.
Crohn's & Colitis Foundation
Senior Research Awards up to $118,182 per year, 10% indirect costs. Duration of award is one to three years. LOI: 11/15/24. Full application: 01/24/25.
Litwin IBD Pioneers $130,000 including 10% indirects for clinical trials; and up to $110,000 including 10% indirects for lab-based studies. Up to two years. LOI: 11/15/24. Full application: 01/24/25.
Career Development Awards Award salary will match applicants’ institutional salary (salaries may be supplemented by the applicant’s institution), depending on postgraduate year (PGY) level, up to $60,000 per year and fringe - up to $15,000 per year, plus $27,500 for non-salary/fringe expenses. LOI: 11/15/24. Full application: 01/24/25.
Research Fellowship Awards Maximum award per year: $70,000 for one to three years including salary, fringe, and non-salary/fringe expenses. LOI: 11/15/24. Full application: 01/24/25.
Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation
Damon Runyon Physician-Scientist Training Award Award period is four years, total award: $460,000. Additionally, The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation will retire up to $100,000 of any qualifying medical school debt still owed by the awardee. Applications due by 12/02/24.
Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award $200,000/year for three years. The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation will retire up to $100,000 of any qualifying medical school debt still owed by the awardee. Applications due 02/03/25.
Damon Runyon Fellowship Award Stipend: $70,000 Yr 1, $72,000 Yr 2, $74,000, Yr 3, and $76,000 Yr 4 plus 2K/year expense allowance. The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation will retire up to $100,000 of any qualifying medical school debt still owed by the awardee. Applications due by 03/15/25
Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
- Category 1 will support research projects with direct costs up to and including $5 million.
- Category 2 will support research projects with direct costs greater than $5 million and up to a maximum of $10 million.
- Category 3 will support research projects with direct costs up to $10 million that utilize PCORnet® to conduct observational studies and/or pragmatic trials that are national in scale.
Funding awards under this PFA are expected to be announced in November 2024.
