Hello MCRCC Supporter!
Meet our newest staff!
Paola Martinez, Crisis Intervention Specialist
Paola moved to Monterey from Sacramento to attend school, where she obtained her B.A. in Psychology at CSU Monterey Bay. She started volunteering at MCRCC in Fall 2016 as an Advocate. She plans to continue school and obtain her Master's in Social Work with hopes of one day working as a therapist with survivors of trauma. She is beyond excited to return once again as a part of the MCRCC team. In her free time, she loves to go back to Sacramento and spend time with her family and Maximo her dog.

Derek Owens, Prevention Educator
Derek is originally from South Carolina and moved to Monterey in 2017 following three years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Panama. The positive role models in Derek's life led him to his position at MCRCC, where he works to provide youth with the skills to challenge unhealthy masculine attitudes and behaviors. He hopes that his contribution to the powerful work of so many people before him will one day lead to a world free of sexual violence.
Labor trafficking is a local problem
Monterey County has a problem with labor trafficking. Recently, we learned of a young dependent adult forced into servitude in a Seaside apartment. She had been allegedly tortured to death by her trafficker. Then we learned about ten agricultural workers found in a field in Salinas. These terrified workers had been forced to live in a small shipping container.

Our community is just beginning to acknowledge that human trafficking happens here and that it is a serious problem.

News from our Board of Directors
We are excited to announce our new Board Officers for FY18-19:

        Maggie Melone - Board President

        Audrey Pierson - Vice President

        Elizabeth Ramirez – Treasurer

        Kevin Cahill - Board Secretary

We would like to express our gratitude to Maija West for serving two years as Board President; we are fortunate that Maija will continue to serve as a Board Member, but it is time for us to say goodbye to Tom Berg, who has completed two consecutive terms on the Board.

Tom came to us with many years
of
experience
studying and treating all aspects of sexual abuse and sexual traumas. His clinical experience as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, as well as his management experience as a Behavioral Health Services Manager, have been invaluable to MCRCC. For the past two years, he also served as Vice President on the Board, taking a leadership role as the organization has grown. We will miss his passion and expertise on the Board, but know that his commitment remains and that we can continue to count on him to help with the training of our staff and volunteer advocates. Thank you so much for your service, Tom.

For the past 15 years during Monterey's Car Week & Concours d'Elegance, MCRCC has benefitted from proceeds and the silent auction at the Automobilia Monterey expo. This year, the 16th Annual International Expo will take place at the Embassy Suites in Seaside on August 21 and 22. We are revved up to be there, and hope to see you at the silent auction!
We hope you or someone you know is interested in becoming an Advocate! For more information about our next Advocate Training, eligibility, and application process, click here. Apply by September 4.
