Saturday Workshop

How Our URJ Northeast Camps Teach Values That Transform Our Home Communities

Join Debby Shriber, director of Crane Lake Camp, and Kadie Black, development director of the Northeast Camps, for an art project that demonstrates how we build a Culture of Kindness and teach our campers to Be the One at our URJ Northeast Camps.

Kadie Black joined the URJ Northeast Camps team in February 2018. She brings a passion for Jewish camping and extensive relationship management experience. Prior to joining the URJ Northeast Camp team, Kadie worked as the manager of philanthropy for Women of Reform Judaism, and was involved in all aspects of fundraising and development. Prior to that, she worked for Our Kids of Miami/Dade Country, a foster care agency, where her responsibilities as the external affairs manager included development; and for the New York Blood Center. Kadie is an alumna of URJ Camp Coleman and is passionate about supporting Jewish youth. Kadie has a compassionate 8-year-old son, Jacob; a spunky 4-year-old daughter, Aliza; an incredible husband, Ben; and a cuddly golden doodle, Lincoln.
Debby Shriber is proud to be the director of Crane Lake Camp. She has been with URJ Camps since 2009 and has worked in the camping field for over 20 years. For nine years she directed Camp Poyntelle Lewis Village, a JCC overnight camp in Wayne County, PA. Prior to that, Debby was a day camp director.
Since 2009, Crane Lake has built new facilities, significantly upgraded existing facilities, and has experienced a growth in campers and an increased retention rate of staff. Debby’s favorite parts of her job are being out and around camp with the campers and staff during the summer and getting to know camp families during the school year.
Debby was raised in Worcester, MA. As a teen, she was an active member of NFTY Northeast and her synagogue, Temple Emanuel. She has a master's degree in social work from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University. Debby completed the JCC Association Lechu Lachem Senior Fellowship and served as a mentor for the Foundation for Jewish Camp Yitro Fellowship. During the school year, Debby and her family live in Fort Lee, NJ.

Social Action at Kallah

We are lucky. Each month, if we need sanitary products, we can order them online or go to the nearest drugstore or supermarket to purchase what we need. This is not what life is like for women in prison. Most prisons do not provide women with these basic health care products. The women must pay for them with the little money they earn behind bars.
Why are we telling you this? As we gather together for a wonderful weekend of learning and prayer, we will address this problem by collecting sanitary products and creating comfort bags for women in prison. We will assemble and decorate bags that will go to Jewish Family Services, which will distribute the bags at a local prison.
Please bring individually wrapped sanitary pads and pantiliners with you to Kallah. Ask your sisterhood members to bring boxes of individually wrapped pads and liners as you gather at your sisterhood/women's group meetings in the coming weeks. Please collect and bring those items as well.
Let’s give these women some dignity. These health products are a necessity, not a luxury.
If you have any questions, please contact Liza Robbins-Theuman at ltheuman@rochester.rr.com.
Thank you!
