Sanford Institute Featured in KPBS for Exploring Empathy in the Brain |
The science of empathy made headlines this month as Sanford Institute Director Dr. William Mobley and Center for Compassionate Communication Director Dr. Evonne Kaplan-Liss sat down with KPBS to share the vision and mission of our organization, and perhaps more importantly, how we bring it to life in our work every day.
During the interview, Dr. Mobley shared how Sanford Institute researchers use brain imaging to help identify neural circuits that create feelings of empathy. "Empathy and compassion are as much a part of brain function as listening and hearing and vision and motor function,” he said. “It’s right there for us to understand and explore, and hopefully right there for us to understand well enough that we can devise training programs to make it easier for us to be skillful in our empathy.”
The UC San Diego Health: Sanford Compassionate Communication Academy Fellowship, facilitated by the Center for Compassionate Communication, is just one example of a training program we've devised based on relevant empathy and compassion research — and it was on full display when science and technology reporter Thomas Fudge entered the Sanford Institute office. Medical professionals dancing, cheering, and team-building with one another in pursuit of empathy and wellness, and the data shows us it works.

Sipping on: Everyone who knows me expects me to be drinking my extra large black cold brew coffee out of a mason jar, at least until I hit my daily caffeine cut off time! In the afternoons, I have been sipping on Waterloo Orange Vanilla sparkling water which reminds me of creamsicles from my childhood summers back east.
Listening to: I have been totally obsessed with Jason Lewis' MindAmend music with Isochronic Tones. There are songs for every mood from Chillhop to Deep House and can be used for concentration and stress reduction, love it all!
Reading: I’m about to begin The Silent Twins by journalist Marjorie Wallace. It’s an eccentric true story about identical twins in the UK who, for no known reason, refuse to communicate with anyone but each other for the majority of their young lives. After a short stint of committing petty crimes, the twins end up in an institution for twelve years.
Excited about: May is my birthday month and I’m really looking forward to a whole lot of laughter and reminiscing with a few friends over Memorial Weekend. We’ll be celebrating springtime exploring the Redwoods and beaches along the lost coast of Northern California.
