Lifesaving Surgery Leads to Generous Kidney Donation |
After a tumor was found during a kidney donor screening, Bruce Paul Allen underwent complex lifesaving pancreatic surgery at UC San Diego Health, known as the Whipple procedure, which was made possible by early detection and the surgical expertise of Moores Member Andrew Lowy, MD, FACS (Solid Tumor Therapeutics Research Program). A year later, Allen became the hospital’s first patient to donate a kidney following this procedure, which illustrates the power of early detection, survivorship, and community engagement through organ donation. Allen now advocates for pancreatic cancer awareness and the lifesaving potential of living donation.
