Research Success at SHSU College of Criminal Justice
Three outstanding undergraduate students from Sam Houston State University's College of Criminal Justice—Avery Brinegar, Daniel Rodriguez, and Jaritzy Ochoa—embarked on a transformative research journey this summer. Under the mentorship of Assistant Professor Dr. Stuti Kokkalera, the team undertook the project "Representing Victims in Parole Hearings: A Mixed Methods Evaluation on Victim Impact," funded by a Faculty and Student Team (FAST) Grant from the SHSU Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
The team dove into a comprehensive research training program, gaining insights into quantitative and qualitative data, code book creation, and data categorization.
Their accomplishments extend beyond presentations—their research paper is in progress with aspirations for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. This success story underscores the value of empowering undergraduate students to engage in impactful research, setting the stage for future academic and professional endeavors.
