If you already have one, refine your plan!
You're 10 Months from Publication! |
Now is the perfect time to get a Substack or newsletter started!
Newsletters are fantastic ways to keep in touch with your friends and fans. It allows you to share some additional insights into your life and your activities and gives you a chance to share your thoughts to the crowd in a thoughtful and introspective way, while also encouraging interaction and connection.
Here are some key points to keep in mind when starting a Substack or newsletter:
|
- It's great to aim for a newsletter once a month.
- You can write about anything you want! It doesn't (and probably shouldn't) only be about your upcoming book or events.
-
Devise a catchy subject line that accurately describes why the content of the message is of interest to the contact in seven words or less. Try to avoid using “book” in the subject line and do try to tie your subject line in to current events or topics.
- Keep your message brief and be sure to include some photos to keep it dynamic!
- Use bullet points and try to avoid large blocks of text.
-
Use a header and subhead that sum up the main points of the email. The header should communicate the main message (particularly the value or benefit to the contact) and the subhead should succinctly communicate the key supporting details. For example:
- Header: Example Title is finally here!
- Subhead: Now on sale at your local bookstores
- Personalize the email in any way you can (eg: include recipient’s first name in “Dear xxxx,” include your signature, do several different emails to different groups tailoring the message for each, etc.).
| There are some fantastic examples of great Substack newsletters from past Red Hen authors linked in the resource section below!
As you get closer to pub date, you should be including pre-order links to your book, but more on that later!
|
As the editorial and production teams continue their contact with you on copyediting and cover design, the media and marketing team are plugging in your author deliverables into our online metadata sheets and we're prepping for our presales conference, where we meet with our distribution team at Publishers Group West to present our forthcoming titles.
|
Your "homework" for this month is... |
Figure out how you'd like to keep in touch with your friends, fans, and network. Will you start a Substack or other kind of newsletter? Will it be regular blog posts on your website? Go through the steps to get this started and start thinking about what you'll be writing and how frequently you'll be sharing!
