Denison
A warm hello to our Denison family!
The Academic Quad
September 2017
The 2017-2018 academic year has officially begun, and campus is buzzing with all the excitement a new academic year brings. Throughout the academic year, you will receive emailed Family Newsletters, designed to bring you timely information to help you support your Denison student.
How Students Can Get Involved on Campus
Being engaged in the campus community is a hallmark of a Denison student. From the arts to athletics, to service and global opportunities, Denison has a vibrant community where students can dive into their passions and find new ones. By joining a student organization, students are able to make friends and feel more connected to campus, all while developing key life skills. If your student is wondering where to start, they are encouraged to contact or visit the Alford Community Leadership & Involvement Center (CLIC) located on the third floor of Slayter Hall.
A message from Hank Malin P’15, Executive Director of the Austin E. Knowlton Center for Career Exploration
On behalf of the Knowlton Center for Career Exploration team, I welcome you to the 2017-2018 academic year!
I joined the Denison family six years ago when my older son started here as a member of the Class of 2015. His experience at Denison was so wonderful that it inspired me to join the Knowlton Center staff as executive director in June. My professional background includes 14 years in education as a teacher and admission professional, followed by 20 years at General Mills working in human resources. I am delighted to be back in higher education.
During my early conversations with students, I have learned that the career exploration process can feel overwhelming. That was my experience when I was in college as well. To help overcome this issue, I’m asking for your help: please encourage your student to own the process. Come see us and ask for help, either in making a start or in further pursuing career investigations.
One of the questions many first-year parents ask is “Can my son/daughter work with the Knowlton Center this year?” My answer is an emphatic “Yes!” We often say “Start Early/Start Now.” But to sophomores, juniors or seniors who have not yet engaged with the Knowlton Center, I say “It’s never too late to start!” We meet students when they are ready. That said, we welcome your partnership in encouraging your students to engage with us and the process of determining the lives they want to lead and how careers and professions fit into those lives.
Beyond reading our column in this newsletter, here are three ways you can stay in touch with what’s happening at the Knowlton Center:
  • Read the Knowlton Note (sent to students each week) which is shared on our Facebook page each Thursday.
  • Visit our Denison@Work blog for career tips, life hacks, and alumni and parent interviews.
I look forward to meeting many of you over the next 1-4 years. Please feel free to contact me directly with your questions, concerns, or ideas. On Friday, Oct. 6 (Big Red Weekend), we will host an Open House from 2 to 4:30 p.m. I hope you’ll stop by our offices in the Burton D. Morgan Center at some point that afternoon … or anytime you are on campus.
Register for Big Red Weekend, October 6-8
On one special weekend each fall, alumni, parents, and friends of Denison are all invited back to “the Hill” for Big Red Weekend, our annual celebration of all things Denison. We have a full array of events planned that you won’t want to miss.

Fall Break
Fall Semester Study Break is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, October 16 and 17. This break, set in the middle of the semester, is designed to provide an opportunity for students to focus on aspects of their coursework that might need extra attention. Some students travel home for the break; many students stay on campus. Students should choose what they feel would benefit them the most. For students wanting to travel home, please know that the university does not provide shuttles to the airport or bus station for the Fall Study Break.
