Message from the Associate Dean and Extension Director  

 As we complete our work for 2018, I would like to take the opportunity to tell everyone in the Cooperative Extension System (CES) that your hard work and contributions are valuable and greatly appreciated. 

I encourage everyone to take advantage of the university closure, get some well-deserved rest, and enjoy the holidays with family and friends.

Extension Strategic Initiative Program - 2018

Up to $500K is available to fund successful projects in each of our primary program areas, consisting of: ANR, 4-H, FCHS, and American Indian Programs.

This is a one-time opportunity for funding for one year only.

The Extension Administration is requesting that all project proposals be submitted to the Extension Business Office by no later than close of business on Friday, December 21, 2018.  The proposals will be submitted via e-mail to: azcebus@email.arizona.edu

Limitations:  Funding will not be provided to support internal program meetings including food and meeting facilities.

Format:  All proposals submitted shall be no more than two pages (12 pt. font, one inch margins) with the following outline and information:

    1.  Project Title
    2.  Principal Director(s) for the project
    3.  Amount Requested and budget (salary & ERE, operations, travel, equipment)
    4.  Brief description of the project and objectives
    5.  How this project will serve to address the Cooperative Extension mission

For consideration of the proposal, please follow the outline provided explicitly.

If you have questions, please contact the appropriate Associate Director for the program area in question.

EFNEP and SNAP-ed In-Service

The EFNEP and SNAP-ed In-services were held Dec. 6 & 7th.

Over 40  EFNEP faculty and staff participated in the In-service on Dec. 6th at the Pinal Co. office. Topics included: county EFNEP participants for 2016, 2017, and 2018 and federal feedback on the program, county sharing of successful teaching aids and projects, program updates and the 50th EFNEP Anniversary plans for March as well as Diabetes Prevention Program updates.

Over 80 attended the SNAP-ed In-service at the Maricopa Co. office on Dec. 7th, slightly up from last year. Topics included: updates from the State Implementation Team with Cristina Gutterman, changes to the Nutrition Facts Label in Hospital and Retail Environments with Martina Cartwright, PhD, RD, UA NSC, and the Survey Builder Tool with Madeleine deBloise, Med., ScD, from the Community Research, Evaluation and Development, Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Both groups contained Breakout sessions for participants: Engaging higher level actors for Greater Change, Healthy Retail, Diabetes Prevention, and Smarter Lunchrooms. Participants indicated a demand for more updates for next year by cultivating knowledge from some of our leading specialists and other experts in the field. 

CEAC Intensive Hydroponic Workshops January 2019

Are you interested in our Intensive Hydroponic courses? For all those folks with interest in learning to grow lettuce and greens or tomatoes within hydroponics in a greenhouse growing room make sure to check out our January 2019 workshops! Join CEAC and Arizona Vegetable Co. from January 2-6, 2019 for the Tomato Intensive and January 5-9, 2019 for the Lettuce Intensive Registration is now open.
 

Healthy and Delicious Food Hands-On Cooking Class

No need to give up flavor to cook healthy meals! Learn new techniques that will delight your pallet without breaking your New Year’s resolution.

Skills taught: Proper roasting technique, knife skills to cut large produce, creating a salad dressing, and proper sauté technique.

Call for Nominations

Each year we recognize our faculty, staff and strong contributors to Cooperative Extension with the Extension Faculty of the Year Award, the Outstanding Staff in Cooperative Extension Award, and the Extensionist of the Year Award. 

The Cooperative Extension Faculty of the Year award recipient will receive $1,000 and an award.  Click here for Extension Faculty of the Year Award criteria and nomination form.   – Submission deadline – February 4, 2019

The Extensionist of the Year award recognizes and honors a resident of the State of Arizona who has demonstrated extraordinary contributions, through UACE, to improving the lives of people in their community and state.  The award will be presented at an appropriate division-wide event.  Letters of nomination from UACE or non-UACE faculty and staff and/or peers should focus on the following criteria:  1) the nature and extent of the contribution provided by the individual (35%), 2) how this contribution has benefitted people in the community (15%) and the state (15%), 3) leadership qualities (25%), and 4) support for UACE (10%).  – Submission deadline – February 4
