December District Leader Newsletter
December 2017 | A monthly publication of the National Speech & Debate Association

Dear Leader,

Below we share upcoming deadlines, ways to get involved, and more! Happy Holidays from all of us at the National Speech & Debate Association!

Board Elections - Throw Your Hat in the Ring

Consider running for the Board of Directors! As a leader in our organization, you already serve our members by facilitating a smooth and accurate district tournament. Members come to you with their questions and problems. Could that experience inform a larger servant leadership role on the NSDA Board of Directors? If you value inclusion, integrity, leadership, and service, and would like to help ensure the organization's sustainability and growth, apply soon!
To declare your candidacy, please notify the Executive Director in writing before January 19, 2018, by certified mail. Each candidate is also alloted one Rostrum column, unedited by the national office, to support their candidacy. Statements are due January 19. 2018. For details, click here.

Recognize Student Achievement

Please encourage members of your district to nominate a graduating senior for consideration for your district's Student of the Year Award by completing this formChairs, when you report the  tournament results, you'll also tell us who received your award. That person will be added to the list of contenders for the 2018 William Woods Tate, Jr., National Student of the Year Award.

National Speech and Debate Education Day

National Speech and Debate Education Day is an important celebration for the speech and debate community, and we are working to make March 2, 2018, even bigger. To do that, we need your leadership! We know you are busy teaching and coaching, so this event is a great opportunity to involve your students or team parents. Select someone to be your NSDE Day Captain, and we will work with them directly to ensure NSDE Day is a success at your school! The level of participation is completely up to you and your team. All you have to do is:
  1. Fill out our sign up form and encourage coaches in your district to do the same.
  2. Promote the event in your school and community.
  3. Share photos, stories, and social media posts on NSDE Day.
This year, every team that signs up to celebrate NSDE Day will receive a toolkit with information, resources, and FREE swag! Learn more at

Tabroom Support

Making the switch to Tabroom to run your district tournament this year? Or using it again but still feeling like a novice? Our Membership Services Coordinator Michael Stroud is here to help Thursday-Monday! He's been answering most everything at since September, and he's ready to help guide you through your district tournament as well.
Michael most recently coached Policy Debate for the University of Texas at Austin and Westwood High School in Texas. Prior to that, Michael was a quality-assurance engineer in Portland and debated for the University of Texas at San Antonio and Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Even if you don't have a specific problem, feel free to reach out for additional guidance, a little training, or to let us know you'd like some extra support come district tournament weekend.
