What does the future hold for ATM functionality?

If you have been following progress of the Consortium for NextGen ATMs, you already know that expectations are very high for increased functionality at both bank and retail ATMs.  And that is not a typo – retail (non-bank) ATMs are included within those expectations.  In fact, a Proof of Concept (POC) is already underway to demonstrate that such equipment can become NextGen compliant at reasonable cost.
So now that we’re prepared to peer into our crystal ball at the entire ATM landscape of the future, how far into that future do we have to look to see that new functionality appearing?  Probably not too far.  We fully expect that somewhere . . . at some point this year . . .  we will see deployment of the first, true NextGen ATM.
Although there is a long list of benefits that come along with NextGen for both consumers and deployers, one of the first and most ambitious objectives is the advancement of Universal Cash Deposits.  Put another way, this is the ability to deposit cash into your personal or business account at any ATM that accepts cash – whether it is operated by the financial institution holding your account or not.  Realization of this goal would have enormous benefits for consumers and small businesses alike.
Payment options are already growing at a rapid pace, many of which will be offered on NextGen ATMs.  Applications for transferring funds, gifting, emergency cash, mobile device top-up, gaming, and much more, will become ubiquitous.
Another huge growth area that has gained significant attention during the past year is crypto-currency.  Many Bitcoin “ATMs” are more kiosk than ATM.  But the differences are diminishing, and NextGen will serve to accelerate the evolution of crypto-currency ATMs.  Recognizing the increased importance of crypto transactions to our industry, ATMIA has created a new Crypto-Currency ATM Deployers Forum group, which is also noted in a committee update below.
There are so many opportunities and new possibilities for the ATM of the future, the view into your crystal ball is going to be a bit crowded.

New dates announced for the USA annual conference

As of yesterday, the COVID-19 new cases count has declined again - 19% over the past two weeks, to the lowest level since mid-October last year (NY Times numbers).  Adding to that good news, ATMIA has pushed the U.S. conference back two months to help ensure that everyone feels even more comfortable attending the ATM industry's largest and most important conference – the ATMIA U.S. Conference & Expo.  June 23-25, 2021.  98 days to go – and counting.
Day 1 begins the event with pre-conference workshops and committee meetings for ATMIA members.  Sign up for a workshop to take a deep-dive into essential and timely topics – including ATM outsourcing (from both the FI and IAD perspective), recycling and cash management, the future of biometrics in the ATM channel, and launching your fleet into the era of NextGen ATMs.  Later in the day, ATMIA members are invited to attend the ATM Town Hall – a panel discussion of cutting-edge and forward-looking technology impacting the ATM industry, followed by the Opening Reception.
Day 2 kicks off the conference’s formal educational program.  Take your pick of 18 breakout sessions covering a full spectrum of educational topics.  Our new format was launched this year in Houston, using a restructured lineup of breakout tracks – Financial Institutions, IAD/ISO, and ATM Industry.
Day 3 features an impressive roster of plenary sessions.  Presenters address topics that affect all sectors of the ATM industry.

Advocacy

ATMIA launches the 'Cash Hub'

ATMIA is calling on the ATM industry to submit their stories, videos, blogs, white papers, images and personal stories that highlight the importance of cash in society. Submissions will be compiled into a slideshow and displayed at the ATMIA US Conference, June 23-25, 2021, in Las Vegas.
Across the globe cash remains the most widely used and popular form of payment,” said David Tente, ATMIA Executive Director for the US, Canada and Latin America. “It is our on-going mission at ATMIA to combat the negative press and help ensure consumers continue to have access to cash as a payment choice.”
The Cash Hub provides information about where cash access is being threatened, cash trends, statistics, infographics, news articles, videos, Cash Council meeting information and additional resources, designed to help ATM and cash businesses stay up to date.
For more information about the ATMIA Cash Hub or to learn about sponsoring the Pro Cash newsletter, contact Claire Feterl by email or at +001-605-274-0277.

Legislative alert sponsorship available

ATMIA USA has renewed the Stateside Associates monitoring services for 2021.  This is a terrific benefit for all ATMIA members.   It includes legislative alerts, regulatory (new law) alerts, and the ATM compliance portal.
It is set up as a dual sponsorship – and Cardtronics has already committed to continuing as one of those sponsors.  A second sponsorship is also available.
The number varies a bit, but somewhere between 400 and 500 ATMIA members receive every alert throughout the year.  In a typical year, 250-300 alerts are sent out  which totals somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 impressions!
Linked logos of both sponsors are displayed in the header of the email alert, along with a printed link at the bottom of the message.  Sponsors also receive multiple mentions for their support in the this newsletter, during meetings, and in news items generated by Stateside activity.
This is a great opportunity to give your organization additional and repetitive visibility to a significant segment of our membership.  For more information, contact David Tente.  These alerts begin in early January and are at their highest level of activity during the first half of the year.  Get on board now in order to take full advantage of this opportunity.

New OCC "Fair Access" rule appears dead for now

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) released proposed new rulemaking on November 20, that we had hoped would be a significant help in eradicating the industry's bank account closure problems.  The new rule would require that all banks regulated by the OCC “Not deny any person a financial service the bank offers except to the extent justified by such person’s quantified and documented failure to meet quantitative, impartial risk-based standards established in advance by the covered bank”.
ATMIA was one of 35,000 public comments on the proposed rulemaking (“Fair Access to Financial Services”).  It was announced on January 15 that the rule had been finalized and would go into effect on April 1, 2021.
The Biden administration, however, has blocked the rule from being implemented.  A number of larger banks had complained that this amounts to the OCC telling them who they can and cannot do business with.
The rule simply would have prohibited reputational discrimination against any business.  If an ATM operator, for example, were denied an account, it would have to be based on documented and well-defined risk criteria – not because the FI does not like ATM operators.  All of which is completely in-sync with requirements outlined years ago within the Durbin Amendment.
This is an unfortunate turn of events for our industry, but ATMIA will continue to do everything it can to support fair access to banking services, and encourages individual members to do the same.

We need YOUR sponsorship to make our 2021 Washington, DC Fly-in a reality

Our 2021 DC Fly-in had been scheduled for Wednesday, March 24, 2021 on Capitol Hill, with a strategy meeting to take place March 23rd at 5:00pm ET.  Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding in-person meetings, the Fly-in has been postponed.  Once we have confidence in our ability to have face-to-face meetings, a new date will be scheduled.
In order to host the Fly-In this year, we will need a Sponsor for the event! This is a great opportunity to host a very visible and important advocacy event – and give your organization some unique exposure for the next 6 or 7 months.  And promotion of the event will continue until it takes place.
It is too early to determine what our focus will be, but support for reintroduction of the Payment Choice Act bills in the Senate and House, as well as the new OCC rulemaking, are expected to be at the top of our list.
For more information about sponsoring or participating in the Fly-In, contact David Tente.

Committee Updates

Check out what's happening with our committee groups:

New Crypto-Currency ATM Deployers Forum group forming

The Mission of the Crypto-currency Deployers Forum, as a global deployers body, is to govern its activities and its working groups in a transparent, non-competitive way. The main objective is to strategically gather and align cross-industry intelligence for security professionals and stakeholders. This will result not only in understanding the emerging global landscape for Crypto ATM deployments, but also in proactively designing responses to ongoing potential government regulations as well as to combat any future security threats against dispensing ATM.  Contact Founder and Co-chair, Mike Lee, for more information.

Why you should be involved in at least one committee group

Access to ATM committee groups is one of the most beneficial perks of membership.  And you have your pick of regional groups, global groups - or both.  There are no limits on how many groups you may participate in.  The only restriction is that you can only join regional committees that are part of a region of which you are a member.
Two of the most popular U.S. regional groups are for ATM deployers – one for financial institutions and one for independents.  Our largest global groups are the Consortium for NextGen ATM and a variety of different security related committees.
Obviously each group is a great vehicle for keeping up with happenings related to its area of expertise.  It is also a conduit for expressing your own views on critical  policies and developments.  And there is no better way to get to know your colleagues.
More information about committees is available on the ATM Committees home page.  Your can join a committee by signing into your ATM account and clicking on the 'My Committee' link.  Also feel free to reach out to David Tente regarding USA Regional groups and to Mike Lee regarding global groups.
If you are interested, please contact David Tente.
