Emory Nowruz Festival
Saturday, March 21, 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m., Emory Student Center
Each spring, millions around the world celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, marking the arrival of spring and a time of renewal, reflection, and community. Rooted in Zoroastrianism, Nowruz follows the Iranian Solar Hijri calendar and coincides with the spring equinox, usually between March 19–21. Although most widely celebrated in Iran, it is also observed in Afghanistan, the Kurdish regions of Iraq, Turkey, and Syria, and Central Asia. The word Nowruz means “New Day,” symbolizing rebirth and new beginnings.
Again this year, the Michael C. Carlos Museum and Emory Libraries are partnering with the Emory Persian Cultural Association to host a cultural celebration of the Persian New Year and the arrival of spring at Emory while also creating space for reflection and remembrance of those who have recently lost their lives in Iran. The event will take place in the Student Center on Saturday, March 21, from 6–9 p.m., and will feature a traditional Haft Sin table, musical performances, cultural activities, and dinner.

Emory University Chaplaincy Recap: Dharma and Eco-Justice Lunch and Learn
On Thursday, March 19 in Cannon Chapel's Brooks Commons, four panelsits engaged Emory faculty, students, and staff in exploring the intersections of Dharmic faith traditions, the living environment, and the law. Drawing on Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist concepts of nondualism, nonviolence, and the living world, the event brought them into conversation with legal perspectives on interests, rights, and personhood. Featuring scholars of both religion and law, both visiting and from Emory, the event highlighted the distinct ethical frameworks within each tradition and applied them to the contemporary discourses on environmental justice, animal welfare, and sustainability.
Panelists included:
  • Dr. Bonnie Nadzam, Associate Director of Ethics, Culture and Religion at the Harvard Animal Law and Policy Program, Harvard Law School
  • Dr. Dhruv Nagar, Bhagawan Arnath Postdoctoral Fellow in Jain Studies, Candler School of Theology, Emory University

Sunday, March 22, 2026, 3 – 4:15 p.m., Carlos Museum, Ackerman Hall
On May 4, 1972, in Derry, Ireland, a ten-year-old Richard Moore was shot with a rubber bullet fired by a British soldier on the edge of his school’s playground.
He returned to his school, attended university, became a successful businessman, founded the organization Children in Crossfire, became an accomplished musician, married a wife, and had two children. In 2006, Richard met the soldier who shot him.
In this talk, Moore will speak on compassion and his journey from a child who was a victim of the conflict in Northern Ireland, to finding freedom in forgiveness.
“Among the billions of people in the world you [Richard] have provided a living example of the true practice of forgiveness and therefore a source of hope for every one of us.” – His Holiness the 14th Dali Lama
The program is free and open to the public, and registration is required. In 1992, the architectural firm of Nix Mann & Associates (now Perkins&Will) endowed this lecture to bring distinguished speakers to campus on an annual basis.
