Discover Dornsife Clusters |
USC Dornsife majors and minors with common themes, questions, and approaches are grouped into clusters. Looking to add a major? Interested in exploring minor options? Try exploring programs by cluster.
The Natural Sciences cluster's Physics & Astronomy Department probes dynamic fields from high energy and condensed matter to cosmology and quantum information. Special features include PHYS 190, where freshmen learn about current research activities and foundational tools, and a dedicated Lecture Support Lab that unpacks complex physics concepts.
The Humanities cluster's Classics Department studies ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and the civilizations they helped shape. Students and faculty partner together up in small-group classes. Learning also takes place outside traditional classroom environments like Classics Tea gatherings, summer archaeology fieldwork, and cultural excursions where Latin & Greek become living languages.
The Social Sciences cluster's Sociology Department explores how politics, culture, economics, health, and power structures, intersect and affect everyday life. Faculty have expertise in more than 15 areas of research and faculty mentors guide students on careers, graduate school, and more.

Mitchell Gray is a senior Psychology major and Legal Studies minor committed to learning both inside classes and outside of them. He has been a research assistant for the Mind & Society Center and the Child Interviewing Lab. He also worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant for Gould School of Law's Vice Dean Donald Scotten. These scholarly pursuits are balanced by work beyond a classroom's four walls: he is the founding board member and current Vice President of the Black Pre-Law Student Association, an organization with a strong emphasis on community service. Additionally, he has served on the executive board of Brothers Breaking B.R.E.A.D. which is dedicated to the personal, professional, and academic development of Black men.

“A community built on a culture of interpersonal support is the most valuable thing you can get from your education.”
When asked for tips to share with Dornsife freshmen, Mitchell emphasized being connected with others. These connections, however, should include both school and outside-of-school contacts. He recommends connecting with professors as well as classmates, teaching assistants as well as student organizations, pillars of the Trojan campus as well as people in the greater Los Angeles community. Having such relationships can help students have a community built on a culture of interpersonal support -- the most valuable thing you can get from your education.
