Duke Alumnus Grant Hill to Speak at 2025 Commencement Ceremony

Grant Hill, a Duke University alumnus and Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, will be the commencement speaker for the Class of 2025. Hill, a legendary figure in Duke basketball, led the Blue Devils to two NCAA championships and was a three-time All-American. Since retiring from the NBA, he has thrived in business, broadcasting and philanthropy, also serving on various boards, including Duke's Board of Trustees. The event will conclude the Duke centennial celebration and mark the 100th anniversary of Duke’s first graduating class in May.

Harnessing the Body’s Ability to Heal Itself
Tatiana Segura, a professor of biomedical engineering, is pioneering the development of biomaterials that aid in tissue regeneration and healing. Her work focuses on creating materials that stimulate the body’s natural repair processes, such as a gel that promotes tissue growth and reduces scarring, which is being tested in human clinical trials for patients recovering from skin cancer surgery. Segura’s research also explores ways to help brain recovery after strokes by encouraging blood vessel growth and reducing inflammation, offering hope for patients to regain lost functions like speech and mobility.

Sacrificial Scaffolding Helps New Hydrogels Heal Quickly

Researchers from Duke and Hokkaido Universities have developed a self-healing hydrogel that becomes stronger as it repairs itself, a breakthrough that could improve materials used in machines, robots and even medical applications. The hydrogel incorporates a unique internal scaffolding that quickly breaks and forms new networks, enabling rapid self-healing and enhanced durability. This development overcomes previous limitations where hydrogels would lose integrity once damaged.

Duke Partners With OpenAI, Other Universities To Find Best Uses For AI in Research

Duke University has partnered with OpenAI to create a roadmap for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into academic and government research, aiming to accelerate scientific discoveries.
