Dear MNPS & Community Member:
As you are likely aware, May is national Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. In recognition of the occasion, I am sharing the quote above by American novelist of Korean descent Alexander Chee because I believe it is both timeless and timely. It encapsulates an admirable spirit of optimism and endurance these communities have exhibited to overcome insurmountable obstacles throughout history.
In Metro Schools we celebrate our students, families, staff and partners of Asian Pacific heritage for their invaluable contributions to our society in many ways.
Until next time!

MNPS Class of 2023 Graduation Dates and Locations |
MNPS graduation dates for the Class of 2023 are May 17-24 at school sites and other locations. Senior year fills students with excitement about graduation, as well as enthusiasm, and sometimes anxiety, about entering the next phase of their lives. There are resources available that can help guide students, and the important adults in their lives, through the planning process for graduating from high school, entering postsecondary education or training, enlisting in military service, or joining the workforce.

Randall Norton, Personal Finance and ACT Prep Teacher, Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School |
Randall Norton’s childhood and other personal and educational experiences contributed to developing his grit to become the successful educator he is today.
Norton’s maternal grandparents were farmers in Athens, Alabama, raising cotton, soybeans and tobacco for a living. They lived on a typical modest farm in the countryside with no indoor plumbing, with open windows and fans during the summer months and wood burning for a heat source during the winter and for cooking year-round.

Nashville Public Library's Cultivating Conversation Clubs for EL families |
Last month, Nashville Public Library's Thompson Lane Branch launched a Conversation Club for English language learners. A native English speaker leads each informal session where learners practice their speaking and listening skills in a relaxed atmosphere. The program is free and goes through August 2023.
This is not a course for beginners, rather a place where those who have already learned some English can meet others to get valuable practice. All adults are welcome to attend, and there is no registration needed. Can’t make it every week? No problem! Discussions will be different each week, and there is no set curriculum. It’s a place to build skills and confidence while learning together.

Nashville's Participatory Budgeting |
Participatory Budgeting is a chance for communities to decide together how government money is spent. The process is simple: craft infrastructure improvement or project ideas and then vote on which ideas to invest in for your neighborhood.
Participatory Budgeting gives Nashville residents the power to decide how to use $10 million to fund ideas for our city! For more information or to submit ideas visit pb.Nashville.gov
