Professor Rachel Mason Dentinger |
Ask me about... "how women have been expanding the bounds of what it means to be a “scientist” for centuries, how human ideas of disease causation have changed over time, or how economic theory and politics have intersected with evolutionary theory since before Darwin’s time."
|
I think the most important thing that I do when I teach is... "to challenge the way that science has helped naturalize social and cultural ideals, categories, and hierarchies. Science, technology, and medicine are immensely important human undertakings, with great practical value to human society, and they are neither value-free nor immune from bias. Helping students study scientific knowledge as a human cultural product—a meeting between our real interactions with the natural world and our own preconceptions and assumptions—is what I enjoy most about teaching and where I think I bring something important to the Department of History."
