As part of the Soc(AI)ety Seminars Series, the Lucy Family Institute invited Arizona State University Professor of Computer Science, Subbarao Kambhampati, to consider the evolving role of LLMs.
The Soc(AI)ety Seminars, hosted by the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, are a collection of talks with a vision for AI’s present and future impact on society, and inspire a dialogue on ethical and socially responsible data & AI innovation. The Interdisciplinary Traineeship for Socially Responsible and Engaged Data Scientists (iTREDS) Scholars Program prepares undergraduate students at the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College in data science, emphasizing social responsibility and community engagement.
As a faculty mentor, you will guide a team of students through a Capstone project.
To participate, submit a project topic/theme and any questions to Sugana Chawla by November 9th.

Usama Fayyad is the inaugural executive director of the Institute for Experiential AI at Northeastern University and professor of the practice at Khoury College of Computer Sciences. He is Chairman of Open Insights, a technology and consulting firm he founded in 2008 after leaving Yahoo! to help enterprises deploy Data-driven solutions to grow revenue from AI and Data assets.

Lawrence O. Hall is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Florida and the co-Director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence + X. His research interests lie in learning from big data, distributed machine learning, medical image understanding, bioinformatics, pattern recognition, modeling imprecision in decision making, and integrating AI into image processing.

We are thrilled to host Connor Coley, the Class of 1957 Career Development Professor and an Associate Professor at MIT in the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
His research group at MIT works at the interface of chemistry and data science to develop models that understand how molecules behave, interact, and react and use that knowledge to engineer new ones, with an emphasis on therapeutic discovery. Coley will explore the role of AI in scientific discovery.

Dylan Cashman, assistant professor of computer science at Brandeis University, is seeking a PhD student who is researching Visual Analytics to start in Fall 2025 at Brandeis University.
The project will be related to reproducible visual analytics research systems. The ideal student should be interested in data visualization systems (i.e. OS, networking, databases experience is a plus). Enthusiasm for this project can be matched with advising, training, and direction. Please share with any interested students that you know. Interested applicants should mention their interest in working with Dylan Cashman, and can apply directly via this link.
