Mary Ainomugisha | NYU Migration Network
The NYU Migration Network brings together NYU faculty and affiliated researchers whose work engages with questions of migration and mobility.
This semester, MCC MA student Mary Ainomugisha has been working on a study with the NYU Migration Network, engaging with media representations of East African migrant domestic workers from Uganda and Kenya in the Middle East. This study analyzes the production and circulation streams of their experiences in traditional media, as well as their use of digital platforms as sites for self-narration and self-fashioning.
In addition, Mary presented at a conference last week on Rethinking African Media at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. The inaugural conference brought together a dynamic group of senior graduate students and scholars, with an emphasis on emerging scholars, to re-examine and reimagine the role of media in forging dynamic identities, communities, social structures, and futures across the African continent. Mary's presentation was entitled: "Where Rafiki meets Jambula Tree: Literary, Sonic and Visual Resonances of Queer Life in Kenya and Uganda".
