Greetings Digesters!
Today is a rather historic day. It's Day 1 of our new location at the Barnyard in Carmel. We had our opening party last night and it was a smash! Above you'll see Ruby, Drew, and Magnus reveling in the new sign made by Ruby, Drew, and Jaimeson from the redwood that fell at the Library in 2012!
The Monterey Herald was there. Check out their take on the proceedings here. Click here for video from KSBW! And click here for an extensive (but alas, not exhaustive) list of the people who made the event possible!!!
If you plan on being in the area, do come by and say hi! 3728 The Barnyard, Suite G-23 in Carmel.
We'll be open every day Noon - 8 PM. (closed on Monday)
Tell your friends! Stay in close touch - we’ll develop this place together!
Henry represented in the new American Writers Museum in Chicago!
The American Writers Museum, the first — and only! — museum devoted to, well, American writers, opened in Chicago last week. We’re pleased to report that Henry is represented! Read all about it at Literary Hub!
Henry Makes a List: "The 100 Books that Influenced Me the Most!"
Originally published in 1952, Henry's "Books in My Life" lists the 100 books that influenced him the most.
He also discusses his approach to reading, using that as a "vehicle for a larger meditation on our culture’s relationship not just with books, but with knowledge itself," to quote our friend Maria Popova at Brain Pickings.
Read the entire book online (!) here.
And check out the full list of books here.
"Bookstores are Dead...Long Live Bookstores!"
One last thing about books. (Noticing a trend here?) Our new Barnyard location is a performance space, an art gallery, and a community center. But perhaps even most importantly, it's also a bookstore.
We're thrilled to join the ranks of area bookstores that aren't just surviving, but thriving in the Amazon age! So do us a favor: next time you're in town, pop in to say hi to (below, left to right) the Old Monterey Book Co., Carpe Diem Fine Books, and River House Books in Carmel.
FLASHBACK: Jonathan Richman at the Library, circa 2010!
Jonathan played the Barnyard last week and, to paraphrase Magnus, "no one walked away bummed." Quite the opposite! We're still buzzing, so we dug up this video, shot practically seven years ago to the day, of Jonathan and Tommy Larkins among the redwoods!
Meet Mary Duncan, author of "Henry Miller is Under My Bed"
Back in May of 2014 we hosted a — dare we say — historic talk on Miller at Dorothy's Gallery, as part of our Aller Retour Paris exhibition.
One speaker was our old friend Mary Duncan, who among things, played some rare audio recordings of Henry.
Her book Henry Miller is Under My Bed: People And Places on my Way to Paris is an illuminating memoir examining how Henry influenced her life and writing. Check it out here.
“Like Henry,” she writes, “I believed in living life as an individual, taking my knocks and having a hell of a time doing it.”
(Fun fact: From 1996 to 2005, Mary Duncan owned a Shakespeare & Company store in Moscow!)

What if they gave a fashion show...and everybody came?!
The 2017 Big Sur Fashion show at the Barnyard was a resounding success! Click here for some amazing photos courtesy of Michael Troutman!
And that, to quote Lou Reed, is the long and short of it.  See you in June! And as always, thanks!
