The Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR) orchestrated robotic deployments within six hours of the attacks. This was the first recorded use of robots in urban search-and-rescue (USAR). Robots were deployed for four primary tasks: searching for victims, identifying efficient paths through rubble for excavation, inspecting structural integrity, and detecting hazardous materials.

The forensic community quickly united—public labs, private companies, universities, software engineers, statisticians, and more—to develop standardized procedures.
At Ground Zero, forensic teams introduced and refined tools and methods designed to handle degraded high-temperature–exposed samples, large-scale data volume, and kinship analysis software, enabling effective identification when direct reference samples weren't available. The innovations developed then continue to guide disaster response and forensic practices worldwide.

Structural engineers analyzed the collapse of the World Trade Center, using physics, materials science, and computer modeling to understand how heat from the jet fuel weakened steel beams. These studies led to stronger building codes and fireproofing standards for skyscrapers.
